My piece on the difference between Confederate monuments and history. History is not a fictive permanence with mystical objects in sacred locations. History is about recording and understanding change.

Trump spends so much time defending statues not because he cares about history, but precisely because he doesn’t

I should be more explicit here: at a moment when universities are talking about diversity and inclusion, they are putting forward unworkable campus plans whose inevitable disruption will be much easier for students with resources to manage.

Since this university’s thinking seems widely shared: what are financial implications for students starting classes f2f but having classes go online soon after (eg, travel costs, lease terms, etc), and what are implications for faculty preparing classes for multiple formats?

Juneteenth has never been a celebration of victory, or an acceptance of the way things are. It's a celebration of progress. It's an affirmation that despite the most painful parts of our history, change is possible––and there is still so much work to do. https://t.co/5XCRdnk3iR

I was a little taken aback when H-Diplo asked me to write for their “Learning the Scholar’s Craft” series since I’m still learning+ I hope my best work is ahead of me, but it was nice to recall many of the wonderful people I’ve worked with along the way

Giorgio Agamben argues that professors who agree to teach online due to the pandemic are like the Italian professors who openly endorsed fascism in 1931. I am very critical of online teaching and see the huge risks, but Giorgio, what the hell do you smoke?

2 pieces of news from the US this morning, on the theme of nationalist protectionism (a la pre-WWII mercantilism): US-China feud at the WHO; creation of a pharmaceutical company in Virginia, hugely endowed by gov, with the ideological mission to "bring home" essential medicines

😃 Maybe we should put together a "zoom screen"-type collage from images on this theme -- starting with Narcissus (Greek mythology) to contemporary versions...
