On the ground for the #palisadesfire in Pacific Palisades. The fire has erupted to 770+ acres. Winds are still strong. My elderly dad lives less than a mile from here. These are my favorite mountains to run in. Always gutting reporting on my home burning.

What’s that sound? Oh, just parents across the DMV cursing as they realize school is closed another day for snow

President Joe Biden is preparing to issue a decree permanently banning new offshore oil and gas development in some US coastal waters, locking in difficult-to-revoke protections during his final...
Notably Biden’s executive order would be rooted in a 1953 law giving presidents broad discretion to withdraw US waters from oil leasing (but not explicitly authorizing revocations). Trump himself used the same power to thwart leasing near Florida weeks before the 2020 election.

Have you ever been confused by what "sell by," "used by" or "best if used by" date labels actually mean? The US govnt announced it is now seeking info about food date labels from industry, researchers -- and even the public (yes, *you*) can weigh in https://t.co/Mtnv3Kdbix

Consumers struggle to understand dozens of differently worded labels, often incorrectly assuming they all refer to food safety.

Shifting diets at scale away from meat-centric meals to plant-based ones could dramatically cut greenhouse gas emissions. But getting people to change how they eat is not easy. @OliviaRudgard + I looked at what's actually moving the needle (gift link):
bloomberg.com
Meat-centric diets are significantly contributing to global emissions. Yet new data show that some techniques to promote more sustainable eating are working.

As some journalists on here seem to be outraged at the idea that governments engaged in global negotiations on the fate of the planet should be expected to speak to the press, here’s a short thread on some Cop issues

I know everyone is talking about Matt Gaetz but please don't miss this: Georgia fired every single person on its maternal mortality review committee. Why? They didn't like that reporters found out that the state's ban killed two women https://t.co/sOzwxrrky0

In a letter, the state’s public health commissioner said the action was taken because “confidential information provided to the Maternal Mortality Review Committee was inappropriately shared with...

Rudy Giuliani's legal woes continue to grow -- the GA election workers say he's violating the consent injunction he agreed to by again repeating false 2020 voter fraud claims, and they want him held in contempt, potentially sanctioned https://t.co/NpUnOvYfkq

Wow -- it's 73 in DC midafternoon -- several degrees warmer than forecast. Could this be the warmest day for the rest of the year? It might be -- but we'd be foolish to say so for sure in this age of human-caused climate change.

Has 1.5C outlived its usefulness as a rallying cry for the climate community? My latest w/@johnainger @climate:
bloomberg.com
Politicians and green advocates want to keep the focus on limiting global warming to 1.5C, even though scientists say the planet is already on track to soon breach the target.

Great thread from Jack here. Russia wants to be a part of the conversation, and wants to be seen as a real threat by the American lawmakers and public. These cases of Russia attempting to disrupt the election are as much about reputation as they are about real influence.
🧩As in previous U.S. election cycles, Russia-linked influence operations have attempted to spread false and inflammatory claims online using deceptive practices. Something else that remains the same: They want our attention and they are trolling us.
