Getting the 1st structural & biochemical view of how this enzyme interacts with its oxidized RNA has been exciting work for our lab, led by my student @lucasg_miller in collaboration with @Resendizlab, @ZhangLab_UT , @CSSBatUT & Phanourios Tamamis (Texas A&M). #whatstartshere 🤘🏾

Stressed about diseases and aging? @UTAustin engineers have discovered insights into an enzyme, polynucleotide phosphorylase (PNPase), that helps protect cells from oxidative stress, a condition linked to sources like air pollution and cigarette smoke.

We are excited to share our most recent publication, led by @lucasg_miller - wherein we use structural & biochemical techniques to uncover the site of 8-oxo-rG recognition by polynucleotide phosphorylase & its impacts in-vitro & in-vivo! #whatstartshere 🤘🏾 https://t.co/8EjSSlcnXs

@ZhangLab_UT This work builds on findings by numerous groups that phosphorylation can regulate CTD (and by extension, Pol II) condensation. Here we show CTD interaction proteins that recognize phosphorylation marks modulate CTD condensate formation and topology 3/n

It was really fun to work with @ZhangLab_UT again who was a valued mentor and champion for me early in my career. I appreciate the opportunity to contribute to this work.

🌌 Dive into the world of RNA Pol II, where tiny "alien" is actually clusters of Pol II CTD in different post-translational modes, forming distinctive phase-separated droplets with unique role in transcription. Check out our new paper just published 👉 https://t.co/yM9aaCdsl3

Thr4 phosphorylation in Pol II CTD is a "phantom mark," hidden until long after transcription ends! 👻 Our recent paper shows it's masked by nearby Ser5 phosphorylation, and we revealed it using a specific phosphatase. Read more: https://t.co/3rkqrvcDlZ #Transcription

So much fun in Waterville valley GRC enzyme meeting. The big finale is the poster winners! These students are all smarter than me. Talking about future!!!Come join us next year July 20th 2025. We will have a pickle ball tournament.

At Enzyme GRC, we anticipate top-notch plenary talks from field leaders. However, what took us by surprise was the caliber of short talks by young investigators. So cool, cutting-edge and electrifying! We were blown away. Join us 2025 at Waterville.

What a fun day in Harvard Med! After talking to brilliant colleagues about transcription, passionate junior scientists about choices in life, end the day with a big bang by going to Fenway park to watch Red Sox and Yankee game. Sox won!

So glad the postdoc speakers from all over the country give us the chance to show off our beautiful campus and energetic city (keep Austin weird).

https://t.co/fTC2bTLp0J One never forgets their first love, mine being the Pol II CTD. Thankful to contribute to this new preprint from @ZhangLab_UT implicating phospho-CTD codensates in the recruitment of splicing factors to elongating pol II + proper splicing in human cells.

Teach structural biology in class and Explain to the student ribbon diagram today. So I dressed up like Triosephosphate isomerase like the one #janerichardson painted decades ago, a green dress for beta-barrel and yellow sweater for helix.

I came to US for grad school 25 years ago, speaking poor English, not knowing driving. Mrs Ji rented me a room in her house and taught me cooking and many things. These nice Americans make immigrants like me feel home. I went back to Eugene, Oregon and spent time with her.

23 years ago, coming to Brian Matthews lab, I realized not only what kind of scientist I want to be, more importantly, what kind of person I want to be. Back to Eugene to see Brian and Helen after saying farewell to them (in tears) on Dec 17, 2000. Mini reunion with Dale and Jean

Intriguing and inspiring discussions about whale behavior in National Geographic Live talks at Long center , secret of the whales, #natgeo. The scientists placed a camera and beluga came over do selfie. Great Q&A session.
