Yosemite National Park is home to about 300-500 black bears. Though there hasn't been an increase in their population since the park closure, bears have been seen more frequently than usual. Check out this bear caught on camera yesterday, climbing a tree next to ranger housing!

Yosemite has experienced significant snowfall in all areas of the park, with snow up to 15 feet deep in some areas and the park’s closure on Feb. 25. Park crews are working to restore critical services so visitors can safely return. There is no estimated date for reopening.

At 3,500' above the valley floor, Taft Point is a stomach-dropping view! Just before the point, watch for The Fissures: deep cracks or joints formed during the uplift of the Sierra Nevada. Rock fell away at similar joints to form the vertical faces of Sentinel Rock and Half Dome.

Yosemite will remain closed at least until Saturday, January 30. Park staff continue to work toward restoring safe conditions after last week's Mono wind event. When the park reopens, it will be open 24 hours a day. Areas south of Yosemite Valley will remain closed.

After studying the impacts of the massive Rim Fire (2013) for 4 years, researchers found that spotted owls were likely to return to their home range as long as the area had less than 30% high-severity burn. This is good news for the owls, a California Species of Special Concern.

Yosemite is returning to normal operations! The visitor center, museum, and Wawona and Hodgdon Meadows Campgrounds all reopen tomorrow (Monday). The Mariposa Grove will reopen later in the week. Ranger-led programs resume tomorrow, and entrance stations will be staffed as usual.

On this day in 1864, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Yosemite Grant Act. This legislation gave Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias to the state of California to be protected for current and future generations, "inalienable for all time." #Yosemite

Farewell to Ben the patrol horse! Ben is retiring at the age of 32 after a 26-year career patrolling trails throughout the park, being part of honor guards, leading mule trains, and more. He will spend his retirement out at pasture with the ranger who trained him in the 90s.

The thousands of years that Ancient Lake Yosemite filled the valley was plenty of time for rivers and streams to bring loads of sand and silt to fill the basin, eventually to a depth of up to 2000 feet, and leveling out the landscape into the unique place we enjoy today.

It may be August, but there is still plenty of snow and ice above 9,500 feet! This reddish colored snow is often called watermelon snow. The red or pink color is the usually green algae's natural sunscreen, protecting itself from too much heat and damaging UV radiation.

A significant Mono wind event occurred in Yosemite National Park on 1/19/21. The winds caused damage to facilities throughout the park, but especially in the southern area of the park and in the Mariposa Grove. There is currently no timeline for when the grove will reopen.

After significant rain and snow, the valley was clear and cold this morning. As the sun warmed the face of Yosemite Falls, chunks of ice could be heard crashing to the rocks below or seen falling if one were lucky or patient. The falls were mostly ice-free by midday.

When one enters Yosemite’s Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias, they find themselves in a grand temple surrounded by trees more ancient than the Greek Parthenon or Roman Forum. Giant sequoias and their cones can also be found on the uniforms of National Park rangers. #Yosemite

Yosemite National Park will reopen to all park visitors on Friday, September 25, 2020 at 9:00 am. Some visitor services will be available and other visitor services will open incrementally over the weekend.

The warmth of orange and yellow colors belies reality. The temperature when these photos were taken near sunrise last Tuesday morning near Tioga Pass was around 18°F... and these lenticular clouds suggest high winds. Brr!

Yosemite will likely remain closed until Friday morning as the park conducts damage assessments, repairs facilities, and clears trees. While some facilities have been damaged, no injuries have been reported as a result of the high winds in the park. 📷 by Lindsay Stevenson
