tbh my favorite part of dungeon meshi is that this panel, izutsumi is clearly referencing this crying cat meme, which came from a picture of my cat inkky. :) inkky passed away in 2020 but tbh i feel a special attachment to izutsumi because of this one panel, like...thats my girl
the real reason that ganondorf is the villain in totk is because he knows that link already caught the only horse in hyrule that's big enough to fit him and he'll do anything to get it
i just remembered that the original version of laios' gourmet guide was ripped up and destroyed by bullies in military school so he painstakingly copied the entire thing into a blank journal. that means all the little illustrations are his....
i love when kui draws laios completely neutral and he has this air of quiet misery and apathy to him. i haven't noticed that in the anime yet. he exudes this aura of boredom and resentment sometimes, the way she draws him.
every time someone in my replies is like "what?? aw i thought dungeon meshi was going to just be a light hearted fun show about eating, but it's actually sad and dark? what a disappointment >:(" im like....
you would fall for his lies
most confusing dunmesh fandom thing is people calling laios chubby or soft or plump? this doesn't come from a fatphobic place of "NOO HE'S NOT FAT DONT CALL HIM FAT" its just confusing bc this man is very clearly REALLY MUSCULAR with some, but very little, body fat
i love that other people find him off-putting and strange but he can effortlessly get animals to love him. realest character in the world for my fellow Weird Boys
i think one of dungeon meshi's best writing strengths is that it uses a lot of fantasy tropes that you take for granted, and then actually has real reasons for them and goes really into depth about it. were told that resurrection is possible and think "makes sense, just like dnd"
this casual reveal that laios has been seeing terrible visions of the dead that no one else can see. just out of nowhere telling the audience "boy I sure hope this shambling corpse leaves me alone :/" it's so funny
sorry to complain but trigger didn't emphasize her eyebags enough. falin is like "marcille you look paler than me" and im like, she looks fine? she looks like she had to wake up 2 hours early not like she depleted all the mana in her body doing ancient forbidden necromancy
im going to keep being petty about ganondorf fanart, jsyk. draw what makes you happy i guess but if you draw the ganon on the left i think you are weak and you will not survive the calamity
bro they made him look so fucking upset in this shot especially. you can feel the hurt that someone he looked up to and admired all this time couldnt fucking stand him
i take issue with people calling laios stupid or a himbo, i love himbos but laios is canonically pretty smart. out of the current party, only marcille beats his intelligence score
when i first read this chapter i thought that the HUGE laios must have been chilchuck's (since he's small and probably perceives laios as a giant) and the crazed laios would have been marcille's, but the adventurer's bible says its actually the opposite
i hope people understand that the reason relationships between long lived races and short lived races is considered "problematic" in dunmesh is because elves, dwarves, and gnomes dont recognize tallmen/halfings as adults w the ability to consent, and not that its inherently bad?
i love when we get random panels like this where it looks like laios is just being randomly silly but then we find out later that at this point he is having VERY INTENSE visions of the dead trying to speak to him and he thinks its hallucinations so he's trying to ignore them lol
ok: so maybe the reason the sheikah and the royal family have always been so close, with the sheikah serving the royal family for ages is because they're /both/ descended from zonai? 👀🧵
i have studied the official art and compiled a drawing reference for myself of his design elements, mostly his jewelry, hair, and how his clothes fit together. feel free to use for reference, things can be hard to decipher in official art so i hope this helps fellow artists!
shuro falling in love with falin because she was admiring something that most women would find ugly and terrifying.
meanwhile everyone thinks laios is a freak and a menace to society because he admires monsters in exactly the same way
modern day laios wouldn't just be commissioning furry art, he is a furry artist. he's designing unique species adoptables and making thousands of dollars because of all the time and effort he pours into them
NOOOO this is so sad BUT its also worth mentioning that its not because they don’t care about him, but that laios’ monster knowledge is so invaluable to the party that no one really thinks its possible to save him
The Dungeons Meshi Blu rays come with two new extras by Kui and this one specifically gave me depression.
To think nobody cared that much about Laios in chapter 1... My heart.
"laios is hanging out with shady people. first option is that he's untrustworthy; if thats the case i should kill him to prevent him from conquering the dungeon. second is hes being extorted, and if thats the case then i save him, and in his gratitude he falls in love with me."
the reason dungeon meshi women are attractive is because they were created by a woman who appreciates other women. seeing people draw marcille as a boring sexy elf, distorted by the gaze of straight men who know nothing about the story hurts something within me
I think kabru is the funniest character, I can't think of anyone else thats just so effortlessly hilarious because of the shit he gets wrapped up in, and it's his own fault. he's a genuinely good and heroic person, maybe even more than laios, but you love to see him go through it
Minor gripe and probably a hot take, but I don't like that Kensuke was kept in Japanese for the English adaptations of Danmeshi.
The characters aren't Japanese. They aren't speaking Japanese. English-speakers are going to miss the wordplay. Kensuke is like Bladejamin or Stabothy
i am thinking about how not only did falin save laios from being killed by the dragon, but she saved him from the lowest part of his life. a job that was exploiting and starving him. he was filthy, no money, no confidence, no faith in humanity, already so beat down in life at ~20
does anyone have this illustration without the title at the bottom. i just noticed that The Thing reference helmet mimic is there at the bottom behind the text and i want to see him
even calling him a "divorced deadbeat dad" like fans love to do plays into this, chilchuck finds it so hard to talk ab his wife its easier for him to lie and say "i cheated, im a shit husband, its over" than for him to say "i love her and she left me and i dont understand why."
the "chilchuck is a hater who doesn't give a fuck" narrative is funny, but excited for the episode about "chilchuck cares a lot, he's worried about his friends and it's hard for him to express. he resorts to insults instead of being open that hes afraid to lose people he loves"
(dungeon meshi spoilers)
thinking about this....i still prefer the first one. i think laios will always reflexively be in big brother mode and do what he can to comfort falin and make her feel at ease, even if he's the one posing a danger to her
they changed laios' expression on the manga print...left is the initial magazine run right is the manga. I guess they didn't want laios to seem happy to kill his sister but I always interpreted that smile as like "hey. it's gonna be okay."k
weird to post a picture of myself pre transition but im still rly proud of this falin cosplay. this was before there was hardly any color refs of her so i interpreted her jacket and hat as being purple and not dark blue/indigo
totk spoilers
when raurus arm was going away I half expected link's arm to just be gone, like rauru said he couldn't save it.......I guess with ganondorf destroyed all the gloom that was corrupting link's arm was gone too but what if link just had to deal with an amputation
could thistle have known that he was going to utterly destroy himself and sink the entire kingdom into ruin for that baby. because he loved his little brother so much and didn't want to lose him.
I hate to say it but senshi was excited to make bread bc yeast is rare and he can't make it often, not because he's obsessed with bread. bread is not nutritionally balanced on its own so he would see it as a rare treat or a good source of carbs, but he's not a bread fiend
i was like "haha. chilchuck in laios' house would be cute. everything is too big for him" but then i realized thats just all we see of chilchuck in the story, the dungeon is designed for taler people. but what if...... laios' in chilchuck's house........
i believe media literacy is at an all time low when im having fun talking about the themes of a story and its emotional weight and someone replies like "what are you talking about its just about eating" do you think its fun settling on the most shallow reading of a text?
tell me why they included a flashback to a conversation that happened less than a minute ago while kabru was speaking and EXTENDED kabru stare but they couldn't include chilchuck petting
i need more of young laios being a cringe edgy pre-teen. him and falin are having a sibling argument and he would be like "aarrgghh you're making me so angry...MY CURSED ARM....IT CRAVES BLOOD" and shes like "you don't have a cursed arm, brother"
when i watched this, for a second i thought it was an animation error and then i remembered ghfgjk its very funny. i dont remember it happening in the manga either, did it?
inspired by people in my notes being confused about trans men lol
(she means well and isn't being intentionally transphobic i just dont think any of the toudens have ever put any thought into gender, including falin and laios before they came to the island)
maybe im a weirdo but these panels had such a profound effect on me in 2017. i was like. thats so beautiful. thats so horrifying and wonderful. thats so grotesque and hideous and gorgeous. i want to draw like this.
every time theres a panel that focuses on kabru's hands holding laios', or reaching for him, holding his arm, gripping on to him im like. what did they mean by this........................
something in the manga that the anime missed is that the elven script actually does look messy. its not illegible to mr tansu because its elven and he's racist against elves, its because it was written by a teenager. its foreshadowing that the lord of the dungeon is just a kid
wooow what a cute opening! they're all partying together in...an endless void with endless food...and there's these sparkles around...and the characters are shown as the food........................😧
i always think about this panel. i know kabru is hyper perceptive and its so easy for him to pick up minor details about a person but. his pupils are dilated?? what can i even say. i cant imagine even noticing that about someone much less noting it in my thoughts. gay ass
