To preface: That’s partially a skill issue. I can play around variance. I can work to not be in those positions. However, it’s significantly harder than in higher power formats. As I see it, there are two fixes. (7/9).

Obviously, Dire Claw. All of these moves induce variance via status/hit number that is not fully in my control. So many times I’ve said, “I win if I get 5 hits,” or, “I guess my win con is a Blizzard freeze.” That’s not how I like to play the game. I want clear lines. (6/9).

Move viability is significantly increased in Regulation H. There is no Glacial Lance, so we use Ice Beam. No Electro Drift? Thunderbolt it is. Urshifu isn’t here to break through sashes so we use Scale Shot. (I’m counting number of hits as a secondary effect for ease.) (5/9).

I’m more interested in moves. Glacial Lance, Electro Drift, etc, are powerful. They’re a little unfair in that regard. However, that’s it. You get hit with the move and you move on. Reg H has a different unfairness: Secondary Effects. (4/9).

Two factors contribute to this. Pokemon, and moves. The first is clear. More Pokemon are viable so there is more to cover for. I can no longer build a team with 1 or 2 unclear matchups. I have to accept that I can’t cover for all possible scenarios. (3/9).

Regulation H doesn’t allow that. People complain about Calyrex (unfairly, imo) but you know what it will do. There is no chance in Astral Barrage. A lower power format like this has an insane amount of variance that comes from widespread viability. (2/9).

I think my problem with Reg H is tied to how I fundamentally play the game: Control. As a competitor I build my teams to leave as little to chance as possible. 100% accurate moves. EV’s/IV’s that don’t force guessing games and ties. Etc. I want it all in my hands. (1/9).
