Historic result in Cambridge, saying Yes! to better elections through #RankedBallots. Incredibly proud of the voters of #Cambridge and the Yes Cambridge! team. Looking forward to seeing the council respect the wishes of voters.

Ontario is the ONLY province in Canada that allows municipalities to use ranked ballots to elect their local councils. London has already ditched first-past-the-post, while Kingston + Cambridge are moving forward with modernizing their elections too:

4. Cambridge City Council has two choices tonight: They can show the rest of Ontario that we're leaders, that we're innovative and that we respect our own voters. Or... we can show that we're stuck in the past, afraid of change.

Hey, @WerkHCN good article. Small correction: Cambridge and Kingston have ALREADY held referenda to switch to #rankedballots—the yes side won in both cases. @YesCambridge @123YGK

For more than a decade, I have been an advocate for electoral reform. So, I'm very pleased that I'll have a chance to vote for a new way of doing politics tomorrow night at council. I will be voting in favour of ranked ballots for #ygk municipal elections.

@JamesHoweWR According to the act, cities are free to determine their election system, and the region is free to determine its election system. Of course, having support at one level will make it easier to gain support at the other level. And mayors are on both city and regional councils. 2/2

@JamesHoweWR Hi James, It's difficult to be sure of process when there's so little precedent. But this is all governed by the Municipal Elections Modernization Act, 2016. We've read it and there's nothing to suggest the two tier system would impose additional hurdles in #WaterlooRegion. 1/

@EClarkeYW @JamesHoweWR @kamorant I have the same understanding re: upper tier needing lower tie buy-in first to proceed. In any case now that @cityofcambridge is moving forward on #RankedBallots let's get KW and others moving quickly as well!

@RankedWaterloo I am a huge electoral reform proponent, in particular MMPR at the federal and provincial level. However, I have some concerns with #RankedBallots. I'm open to the discussion and would like to review the results in London.

@RoyceBodaly The referendum in #Cambridge has made it clear that there's significant appetite for #RankedBallots in our region. What are you doing to bring Ranked Ballots to #Waterloo in 2022? #RankedBallots2022

Election reform is on the march. More municipalities will use ranked ballots in 2022 than did in 2018, and that's good for democracy in Canada. https://t.co/YIBEeTlKKT

In the first-ever ranked ballot election in Ontario, the new system didn’t have a dramatic effect on the results. But something did change, writes Edward Keenan.
