Mannn you people are so weird. Someone spent her own money to book flights and came here to do her own thing, yet still used her precious time to cover what those paid to represent us didn’t bother doing. And this is your take?.

Not just Eswatini, other smaller countries were there for actual business. You can tell they were not ready to go back home empty handed

This is Eswatini. A very very small country with a GDP less than Yaba showcasing themselves in Japan. Nigeria booth is empty. Common citizens had to take it upon themselves to showcase the country. Nigerian Foreign ministry said they want to inaugurate the booth first.

Over the weekend, I spent time with a Kenyan friend who works in their investment promotion department. Their delegation had been meeting daily, reviewing strategy, aligning talking points, smoothing out their plan. And today, you could tell, they came prepared.

Hall D, for example, was all Kenya, South Africa, and North African countries. Their top ministers were chairing sessions, leading discussions, and initiating deals right there on the spot. Meanwhile, not a single Nigerian official in sight. Absolutely no one!

Another thing that struck me was seeing how the Nigerian president allegedly traveled with a large delegates, yet when it mattered most, there was no Nigerian presence where deals were actually being made.

Honestly, today could have been a huge win. Instead, it turned into a lesson on how not to show up when the stakes are high. We can’t keep dropping the ball like this. Not when the world is ready to listen!.

Some might think this is a small thing. But when you’re asking Japan for investment, these “little things” are everything. Just like @NaijaFlyingDr mentioned These Japanese firms are actually bullish on Nigeria. Across all sectors. They want to invest. We’re just not showing up!.

Then he casually added that their Kenyan experience has been the exact opposite. Warm reception, organized engagement, gifts, goodwill, the whole package. He said, “I can already see why it’s easier for us in Nairobi.” That one stung fr!.

And it wasn’t just them. Another company my firm has been trying to work with, whose booth was just two rows away, was complaining about how disappointing their Nigeria expansion experience has been. He literally pointed at our empty booth as a reflection of that.

Even though these firms are solid with their DD but with Japanese business culture, numbers alone don’t close deals. Presence, reliability, and relationship-building do. And today, Nigeria failed on all three. It’s Business with Japan 101. Literally the 1st Chapter of that book.

He was bitterly complaining about the Nigerian booth. Said his team and partners who came in the morning were stood up. Many were very keen to meet Nigerian reps, but left with nothing but frustration. And anyone who knows Japan knows this matters.
