I think people are mad not because of a strict idea of "accuracy" but out of the desire to be shown something genuinely striking and transporting, not just already vague and anachronistic ideas of "antiquity" done in matte black plastic

You're telling me the aesthetic of the Chris Nolan Odyssey movie is brown and black leather tacticool gunmetal straps? You're blowing my mind I would never have imagined.

Airlines will send you an email like "IMPORTANT must read details about your flight: DO NOT DELETE" and you open it and it says "your flight will be at something called an "airport""

So it is hard to say the term hasn't always been "anti-woman" in some sense, but the original context was much more, uh, intra-gender

the origin of the term "Mary Sue" is interesting, because it comes from one specific satirical Star Trek fan fic written by a woman making fun of that type of character in Star Trek fanfic magazines mostly for and by women (in 1973).

about once a day I think of the expression Keith's Oberlin scumbag roommate makes when he's asked what's in a hollandaise sauce in Frownland

this is just kind of how merritt is all the time. Seen him twice, once "in conversation" and the impression he gives is that he's always on the verge of killing whoever he happens to be looking at in that moment and then himself

read JD Salinger's wikipedia today. It starts out really sweet with him fighting in WW2 and writing a lot of acclaimed stories, but then it mostly becomes about how he liked sending romantic letters to 18 year olds to get them to come hang out with him on his compound

Julia Rotenberg and Elisa Zuritsky provided a "solved" theorem of heterosexual dating when they came up with "he's just not that into you" for Sex and the City, and yet 20 years later we fail to remember the ancient texts

Alec Baldwin is a particular type I enjoy of the inveterate womanizer who gets to the point of being too lazy and gross to keep it up, so they just stick with whichever woman is around when the music stops. Newt Gingrich another example

The most incredible thing about Crumb (the documentary) is that within 5 minutes you'll be hit by the realization that despite everything Crumb is extremely sexy and charismatic.

Love Takes Miles is such an incredible song. If it had been written by a 70s soul artist he'd use it to close shows for the next 40 years.

some might actually think about the question in some critical way, ask what it means to be proud to be a member of a nation state, what that state means or has done that one could take pride in. Republicans just say yes because they know that's what they're supposed to say

Oh, and don't try to tell me it's about how this specific question was asked. Every other question about patriotism shows the exact same pattern, and it's fucking horrible.

[having lunch with Trump at Sardi's after traveling to the timeline where he became a Broadway producer] Trump: Sutton Foster. Couldn't hack it in Hollywood so she comes back here on her hands and knees. And I do mean knees if you get my drift. Me, tears in my eyes: yes sir
