Our new working paper with Michael Reich @IRLEUCB is out! "Sectoral Wage-Setting in California" We provide the first causal evidence of the (highest in the US) $20 minimum wage for large fast-food chains in California, implemented on April 1, 2024. https://t.co/ku28l2G3CK 1/7

No better time than #DNC2024 to remind the world that Chicago is a union town. Great energy at the @IllinoisNurses picket line! Fair contract now! #1u

One of Harris's first major policy announcements is rent caps. Yes, it's just messaging, we need material change, AND it was NOT (!) a given that this demand would be a priority, let alone on day one. Tenants have organized a profound shift in political conditions. Now let's win.

Just a brief moment of gratitude for @GovPritzker, who, say what you will about the man, is aware that Black people have encountered computers
The sitting Governor of NY says “young black kids…in the Bronx don’t even know what the word ‘computer’ is” How do these people get away with saying such things?

This is incredibly cool and I’ve been trying to find seed funding for something like this at the state level for a while. A really innovative financing tool to build social housing sustainably with one-time cash
Included in this bond package is a $125M appropriation to a revolving loan fund for mixed-income housing production, a la Montgomery County. Goes to the full council tomorrow. If it passes Chicago will be the 3rd jurisdiction to establish such a program—and have the largest fund.

The Chicago City Council finance committee approved a proposal to sell up to $1.25 billion in housing and economic development bonds

Why should you care about these races? Lots of reasons, but look no further than this cycle's top race. If @RossanaFor33 had already been committeeperson in 33 last year, @graciela4senate would have been appointed, and we could have all saved an awful lot of time and money.

And finally down south, my amazing colleague @theresamah4rep won a 9pt victory over former Alderman and current Board of Review member George Cardenas. (Not pictured: Ricky Mercado, whom I could not find a picture of, despite extensive searching. Sub-optimal for a candidate.)

Up in Jeff Park, progressive challenger @mprabbitt will oust Joe Cook, the current committeeman in the 41st Ward (running in 45 after the remap). This race looked like a nailbiter on Election Night, but the mail ballots have widened Rabbitt's margin considerably.

In addition to losing her seat as Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County, Iris lost this race overwhelmingly, only narrowly winning three of the ward's 17 precincts.

Next round of maps: ward committeeperson! Of the 50 wards in Chicago, only five of these races were contested (!!). Of those five, *three* featured progressives defeating incumbents. Let's start in my backyard: @RossanaFor33 with a resounding defeat of incumbent Iris Martinez

Per @jake____lewis's request: here's the @graciela4senate vote share with turnout. As you can see, she absolutely crushed in most of the highest-turnout precincts.

Oh and also, if you don't know @graciela4senate, hooboy. Look out world. She's passionate, brilliant, driven, and she's got a heart the size of Texas. She's already done so many big things as an advocate, organizer, mutual aid leader. Just WAIT for what she does in the Senate.
