Schey continued to work at state mental hospitals doing what she could for patients on the ground as reforms slowly began to take hold. Her work and the work of other organizers has helped pave the way for improving conditions and to reduce the stigma around mental health today!

Schey brought attention to these conditions to her superiors and representatives in local government, but was frustrated by their lack of knowledge or interest in the plight of people suffering in Minnesota’s mental hospitals.

For much of her early life, Schey worked as a social worker in Chicago and Milwaukee. She later moved to MN and began work as an attendant at a mental hospital where she witnessed firsthand the horrific conditions, abuse, and understaffing that patients were subjected to.

For #WomensHistoryMonth, we’re highlighting the story of Engla Schey, a working-class woman who profoundly influenced the mental health field. In 1948, the governor of MN began to reform mental hospitals after he learned of abuse and mistreatment at facilities across the state.
