We won't stand by as anti-abortion groups try to undermine established science. Today with @UCLAReproPolicy we submitted a letter signed by hundreds of scientists urging the FDA to follow the research & refrain from imposing restrictions on mifepristone.

Restricting reproductive rights is a hallmark of authoritarian regimes. Restrictions on reproductive freedoms often necessitate other kinds of restrictions – like limits on free speech and travel – to enforce and maintain them. https://t.co/QbvgZ9mvmb

Banning abortion instantly oppresses a huge swath of society. And enforcing abortion bans begets a police state − an upside for dictators from Mussolini to Ortega.

There’s a harmful myth that most patients regret their decision to have an abortion. In fact, the opposite is true. The majority of Turnaway Study participants reported feeling relief even years after their abortion.

Although many pregnant people use cannabis as a medicine to manage pregnancy symptoms or health conditions, they perceive providers as viewing and treating cannabis as a harmful recreational drug, according to a new study. https://t.co/qW5xcmdHXX

The medical consensus on APR is clear: It’s not possible to “reverse” the effects of the abortion drug mifepristone, and attempting to do so may even be dangerous. https://t.co/PAEZTdxho7

Blue-state attempts to crack down on the treatment could end up shielding “fake clinics” from any oversight.

“If we had a social safety net that gave pregnant people other paths to healthcare, housing, food stability, and living wages, then the deceptive, strings-attached support of both types of institutions would hold little appeal,” Sission writes.

“In the same way pregnant women will go to [crisis pregnancy centers] because they need pregnancy tests or free diapers, they go to maternity homes because they need housing,” explains ANSIRH researcher Gretchen Sisson. https://t.co/rtLuHCRmov

Even living in a pro-choice state doesn’t guarantee access to abortion care. An Illinois woman was denied emergency care for her ectopic pregnancy by an anti-abortion OBGYN before receiving care elsewhere. https://t.co/KqrfJ6Ms7t

Adoption can be traumatic for all parties. Placing a child for adoption is an extremely difficult emotional step for most people — and it is often traumatic for both the birth parent and the adoptee.

"Mifepristone’s safety record outpaces that of penicillin or Viagra. Why then would our nation’s public health leaders want to investigate a medication that has a track record other medications would envy?" Read this op-ed from @DrDGrossman in @TheHill.

Rather than placing more limits on medication abortion, the scientific evidence points in a completely different direction.

Pharmacy dispensing of mifepristone was approved by the FDA in 2023, but educational opportunities for pharmacists were limited. Our researchers designed an educational course for pharmacists, which enhanced knowledge & support for medication abortion. https://t.co/r79piWnJbR

According to ANSIRH's @DrDGrossman, the anti-abortion movement’s promotion of abortion pill "reversal" is akin to an “unmonitored research project.”

Speakers at a crisis pregnancy center conference made rare admissions about the challenges of providing so-called abortion “reversal,” and indicated its importance as a litigation tool.

Abortion bans hurt families. When people are denied an abortion, they are at higher risk of poor bonding with their babies, and their existing children are also more likely to be raised in poverty and less likely to meet developmental milestones.

ICE is targeting people in hospitals and clinics, deterring people from accessing essential pregnancy care. Many patients — nervous about encountering immigration officials — are skipping virtually all of their pregnancy-related health care. https://t.co/YLG56KcGRI

Fear of deportation is deterring people without permanent legal status from critical care. Doctors are worried for their health — and the health of their pregnancies.
