On Provenance Research Day, I'm sharing a lecture & workshop that I'll be delivering at @SothebysInst on the 'Ethics, Law and the Art Trade' elective. It feels great to be putting SIA on the map as one of two participating institutions in the UK! #tagderprovenienzforschung

On 04.12, @SothebysInst students joined me for a workshop on provenance research at the National Art Library @V_and_A, where they pored over the Nazis complete inventory of “Degenerate Art”, the infamous 1939 Galerie Fischer Auction, and a series of forced sales catalogues.

Venice Biennale Day I: It was a joy to see @SothebysInst MAAB students absorbed in the history of the exhibition at Asac-The Biennale Library during my workshop ‘Looking Forward & Back at the Biennale’. With four gate-crashers, I had to tear them away from their books!

It was a joy to deliver my first lecture at @SothebysInst on ‘Impressionist, Modern, & Post-War Markets: Protagonists, Institutions, & Histories’, from familiar names such as Paul Durand-Ruel to lesser-known like Berthe Weill, concluding with a quiz on the Art Basel & UBS Survey.

Friday started early with a breakfast of blinis & poached pear for a panel discussion on 'From Shadows to Spotlight: Art #Provenance in the New Regulatory Era' @Tate. I was proud to see @AngelinaGiovani among them, speaking about the market's transparency, or rather lack thereof!

Full steam ahead to @itsartlaw's 'Nazi-Looted Art Restitution' project, which was presented today in a webinar with Amanda Buonaiuto, Irina Tarsis, Richard Aronowitz, & Peter Toren. With 300 cases and counting, the project is seeking volunteers, data, and donations...

Calling for a cross-boarder approach for recovering looted art, @ecampfens1 proposes 1) a neutral knowledge centre for provenance research & 2) a central alternative dispute resolution mechanism. After all, looted art is a “matter of human rights”.

Last night we welcomed a new cohort of Master’s degree students at @SothebysInst with a drinks reception at @TwoTemplePlace, a neo-Gothic gem of a building on London’s Embankment. The staircase was sublime. The company cordial. But, best of all, would you look at the canapés!

If the soaring glissandi of The Klezmer Society were anything to go by—not to mention the cooing calls of the macaque in the guided tour of ARTIS as a hiding place for Jews during WWII—the ‘Future of #Restitution’ is loud & clear: more noise needs to be made about it!

The annual meeting of the @AKProvenienz (Working Group of #Provenance Researchers) kicked off in style with a drinks reception at the @rijksmuseum. Thanks goes to all the organisers of the #Looted symposium: @LevydeGruyter, Aurora Wilson Dyer Gough, @meikehopp & more…

On #InternationalLiteracyDay, travelling on a train through Europe, I want to share a passage from Jenny Erpenbeck’s ‘Kairos’, which deftly captures Germany’s generational divide at the time of reunification. Erpenbeck is certainly up there with my favourite contemporary writers.

It was an intimate experience to visit ‘Cosmopolis: The Impact of Refugee Art Dealers in London” @BenUriOnline — both in terms of the viewing experience (as the sole visitor) & the extent to which the curation traced how intricately linked the postwar artistic émigré network was.

Tonight @wienerlibrary, Kinga Bloch (@lbi_london) & her “Book Detectives” talked about The Library of Lost Books, a citizen science project that is far from over… While 4,500+ lost books have been identified, there are still thousands more to find. #haveyouseenthisbook

And that’s a wrap! @WIGSblog’s conference @UCC, organised by the wonderful @RLRMcGovern & @MarninaW, was a welcome reminder of what academia can be: a safe space for genuine exchange, free from the ‘Boundaries & Barriers’ of hierarchies & competition, if to borrow from the title!
Final day of the WIGS conference in Cork. Three great papers followed by the AGM. Thanks so much for hosting @RLRMcGovern

Kicking off @RLRMcGovern's conference on 'Boundaries & Barriers' @UCC is a paper from @WIGSblog representatives (@IngridESharp, @CorinnePainter, & @L_Earnshaw) on the cocoon of academia & how to break out of it with cross-disciplinary, cross-hierarchical, & CREATIVE projects.
