“Rose Street was repaved late last year, and Fry said it should have also gotten safety upgrades such as speed tables or raised crosswalks to go with the new pavement.”.

The @CityofBerkeley issued a news release about the pedestrian fatality on Rose Street. This may be a first. We appreciate the acknowledgment and encourage rapid response actions, consistent with the City’s #VisionZero Action Plan.

We mourn the death of this community member and hope it bolsters the City’s resolve to build safer streets that help eliminate severe and fatal collisions. #VisionZero.

Thankfully Berkeley voters are more.committed to safe streets than CM Hahn, passing Measure FF by a wide margin and voting down EE, which would have provided far fewer safety improvements.
berkeleyside.org
Most measures require simple majorities to pass, but two — to fund public libraries and parks work — need two-thirds majorities to succeed.

The FF campaign even highlighted increased, unsafe speeds on Rose after it was repaved without safety improvements last year. If the City had added traffic calming features recommended in the bike plan, it could have prevented or reduced the severity of this collision. 😞.
Repaved streets without any safety improvements become more dangerous for pedestrians. Without any safety improvements, cars tend to drive faster on smoother surfaces. Citizen collected data in Berkeley shows this happening on a recently repaved street next to a school. 🧵

Breaks our heart to share that the pedestrian hit at Rose St and Josephine yesterday has died. Update:
berkeleyscanner.com
The man who was killed was a 78-year-old Berkeley resident. The driver was a 79-year-old Berkeley woman. It was the fourth traffic fatality this year.
Upsetting news. A motorist severely injured a pedestrian on Rose Street this evening. We hope this person has a full recovery. Berkeley needs to renew its focus on #VisionZero. ❤️🩹 .
