The math isn’t mathing: 22 elected Trustees (each $24,000/year) replaced by 1 gov’t appointee ($350,000/year). Meanwhile, Ontario schools have been short-changed $6.35 BILLION. Enough is Enough. Fund Our Schools. #DemocracyNotBill33 #OntEd
NEW: the Ford government’s appointed school supervisors can spend up to $350,000/year, according to the education minister. That money will come from school board budgets, not the ministry of education. To compare: the TDSB’s 22 trustees made just over $550,000 last year.

Bill 33 guts student unions, silences advocacy & puts Queen’s Park in charge of campus life. Students deserve autonomy - not government overreach. Democracy Not Bill 33! #OntEd

NEW: the Ford government will not install safety measures like speed bumps in time to replace speed cameras. Critics say school zones will be left unprotected when the cameras come down Nov 14: “if one kid is injured in the interim, it’s gonna be on this premier’s shoulders.”

Democracy is messy but not disposable. Ontario’s provincial government has faced scandal after scandal. By Ford’s trustee logic, all levels of government should go. School boards aren’t perfect but they’re essential to public education. #FundOurSchools #DemocracyNotBill33 #OntEd
After a summer that saw Premier Doug Ford seize control of five school boards and appoint supervisors to oversee operations/finances, it was an interview with Education Min. Paul Calandra at the start of the school year that confirmed what many had feared

We support Ontario's four publicly funded school board associations' call to the province to work collaboratively with those who know their communities best to improve speed camera enforcement. Not eliminate it. https://t.co/yEJmqYH7cM

Banning livestreams of school board meetings during supervision is indefensible. This censorship erodes democracy and echoes authoritarianism. SEAC, disability advocates and allies must keep pushing back. Fund Our Schools!Democracy Not Bill 33 #OntEd
UPDATE: Ontario’s education minister tells us he will be upholding a livestream ban of school board committee meetings. Special ed advocates are furious: “the truth is, the man can't take criticism & doesn't want attention on the fact that he’s making terrible cuts to education.”

It’s Local Government Week in Ontario! A time to recognize the vital role that local democracy plays in our communities! Democracy isn’t outdated — it’s essential. Democracy is not outdated – it’s the foundation of accountability in public education.

Ontario’s public school boards give families a real voice in education. Now, that voice is at risk.

Ontario’s education minister said he banned livestreams of school board meetings to “bring down the temperature.” Critics fired back, telling him to “fund the system” if he wants to cool things down. Paul Calandra’s now “taking another look” at the ban after parent backlash.

OPINION: Renewal of school boards needed, not removal of trustees

Four former directors of education argue that instead of eliminating school trustees, a review of the mandate and operations of school boards ‘could be beneficial’

Chronic underfunding is the root cause of financial crises in school boards. The province’s takeover and talk of eliminating trustees is about erasure not reform. School boards need support, not scapegoats. Fund Our Schools. Democracy Not Bill 33! #OntEd

NEW: Ontario's education minister says he’s reconsidering his directive to block school board meeting livestreams, after backlash from parents. "The initial decision was to bring the temperature down, focus on the work," said Paul Calandra. "I'm going to take a look at it again."

Parents tell CityNews they fear the Ford government is attempting to cut access to information and suppress their voices, after the education minister ordered school boards to block public livestreams of meetings. “This is a real barrier to transparency & accountability.” Story:
