Well I’ve managed to get locked out of my old account after over 12 years. Twitter/ X have not helped at all and aren’t responding so have decided to bite the bullet and set up a new account. 🤦♂️
As a person not from a nationalist background this does not surprise me. The status quo is awful. Who doesn’t want to explore new possibilities? The prospect of a new Ireland is far more appealing than more of the same stalemate, failure and endless indulgence of intransigence.
🚨Jamie Dornan joins a growing group, not from a nationalist background, showing interest in what a united Ireland looks like for all the people of the island, regardless of their traditions or beliefs.
🚨A Dublin Govt must lead on what the vision for a united Ireland is
Northern Ireland isn’t working. The prospects of a restored Assembly look grim. How can we move things forward? For me a new Ireland has a lot going for it. Political stability, economic prosperity, better pay and living conditions, back in the EU. Why not?
Suella Braverman clearly doesn’t think much of people from the North of Ireland. This is a bit of a recurring theme. English nationalists would love to cut this place adrift. Could this dynamic be what ultimately gets Irish unity over the line?
As a football fanatic the idea of watching the Euros right here in my home city is beyond exciting and is the only argument I need. But beyond that, think of the big concerts Casement could host. Currently Dublin is getting all those gigs. Do we really want to miss out on that?
Real lack of self awareness from Paul Givan who is decrying talk of a new Ireland as unhelpful 24 hours after his party helped launch a document entitled ‘Safeguarding the union’. Why is the former unacceptable, but the latter okay?
#BBCTheView
Protestants aren’t a homogeneous group. This is kind of commentary with a hammer is very disappointing, particularly as a Protestant who very much wants a more just world and who is horrified by the events unfolding in Israel-Palestine.
Why do Ulster Scot Protestants support genocide? The mass murder of men, women and children? Why do they champion it with such relish - crush, erase, eradicate, destroy? 8,000 murdered already. How many dead kids is enough? 10,000? 100,000? 500,000?
There’s an end of days feel to Northern Ireland right now. A sort of half-hearted anarchy pervades as swathes of what society takes for granted are breaking down. The scale and nature of the crises now unfolding will have profound political consequences.
This just makes sense. It’s the low hanging fruit of the rail network. Let’s make sure it happens. Delighted that the SDLPs first motion of this mandate is about expanding our rail network. 🙌🏼
Although a United Ireland is not necessarily inevitable, it is certainly highly probable given the demographic changes alone, but also the fact that Unionism comes across as so backward and conservative. Not one unionist voted for the recent Palestine-Israel ceasefire motion.
The DUP don’t own this place. They can stop the formation of an Executive, but they aren’t the masters of our destiny. If they don’t want to participate in government we must move forward without them and deliver the public services and economic prosperity our people deserve.
Alliance won’t take a position on the constitutional question and not just because of the dead legs from sitting on the fence. They need those unionist votes in places like Lagan Valley and East Belfast, but equally those soft Nationalist votes in South Belfast. Trouble ahead.
If Matthew O’Toole as leader of the opposition gets less coverage on local media than certain fringe elements who seem to hog prime time coverage there really are questions that must be answered.

border poll results:
🔷NI remain in UK 49%
🔷Irish unity 39%
🔷Undecided 11%
🔷Wouldn't vote/spoil vote 1%
United Ireland most popular choice for under-45s, with support for Union strongest amongst middle-aged & pensioners.
It really is extraordinary that Jamie Bryson has been able to live tweet the content of the DUP meeting despite not being present. Elite level shithousery.
A great day for the trade union movement today in Northern Ireland. A clear message was sent to the British Secretary of State and the DUP. We demand fair pay, and properly financed sustainable public services!

who is not only a throughly decent human being, but an incredibly capable politician of the highest calibre. Fiercely intelligent, and grounded in strong values. No better person to lead the opposition 🙌🏼
In case you are interested in why public sector workers were on strike today across Northern Ireland. Here is a clip with some of my thoughts from The Context on the BBC news channel.
2024 will see a Seanad by-election, and European elections, in the Republic. Will we see more Northerners running? Given the current political landscape re EU relations, and growing conversations on constitutional change, there's a clear need for more Northern voices.
I spoke in favour of an immediate ceasefire for Gaza today. The wholesale slaughter of innocent Palestinian men, women & children has no possible justification.
Excited to get involved in the campaign to re-elect Claire Hanna MP. She has not only been an important and effective voice at Westminster, but a hard constituency worker across South Belfast and Mid Down. Reverting to a DUP MP is unconscionable. Get involved!
Our town centres are dying. The complete dominance of the car is a factor in this. If we want to reverse this trend expanding pedestrianisation would be a good place to start. In places like Market Square in Lisburn there is scope for similar pedestrianisation.
Justin McCamphill setting out clearly why teachers and lecturers have no choice but to go out on strike on Thursday. We are paid significantly less than our counterparts in England, Scotland, Wales and the South of Ireland. We will not be treated like second class citizens!
A great day for the parish. Made my debut on Nolan this morning and finishing the evening on my favourite news show The Context, with Christian Fraser on the BBC News Channel.
More divisive than advocating for continued membership of the UK? This is not the spirit of the Good Friday Agreement. Parity of esteem means we can all validly aspire to the realisation of what we think is the best constitutional future. These double standards are divisive.
A border poll would be divisive and expensive.
It’s right to say it’s not on the horizon.
We need to focus on:
✅ Addressing cost of living issues.
✅ Encouraging investment for jobs.
✅ Ending division.
Let’s move forward in Northern Ireland, not drag ourselves apart.
All these identifiable brands. Surely there has to be some responsibility for the impact of single use packaging? We need more robust EMR (extended manufacturer responsibility).
Taoiseach: “Why is there a double standard applied to Irish politicians … when we say we’d like to see a United Ireland.”
“The PM describes himself as a proud unionist. The SoS often talks about how committed he is to the union . Not only to we accept that - we respect it.”
It’s becoming increasingly difficult to demonise Gaelic games. Cue the faux outrage when the Deputy First Minister samples some Camogie. A game played by 100k women on this island. Fair play to

reconciliation starts with respect and reaching out.
Funny how when the DUP were in the Executive they were absolutely fine with this ‘divergence’. I suspect that won’t change any time soon. FE lecturers similarly disadvantaged.

To address the worst waiting lists on these islands.
To fix crumbling schools.
To sort out SEN places.
To resolve public sector pay disputes.
To get our economy going.

One of the toughest aspects of teaching A level students is the fact that every year you have to say goodbye to students you have bonded with. I am privileged to have played a small role in their journey. I learn a lot from them, and it’s the students that keep me going. 🫶🏼
Good to hear the growing issue of food poverty - & its link to learning for our children - being raised in the Assembly. We urge the Minister to look for meaningful ways to address this

As a parent of a past and present Millennium pupil I am appalled that a deal has apparently been made by executive parties that would allow this to happen. The new campus was approved years ago and substantial work already carried out. We feel badly let down.
The withdrawal of needed new-build funding from

We need to progress legislation that will prevent developers from sitting on key sites like this as they fall further and further into dereliction. It’s shameful.
Twenty years in the hands of two developers, neither of which have made any actual positive contribution to the fabric of the city. Photo of Lower Garfield Street taken ten years ago this week.
As a trade unionist, I always find Mick Lynch really inspiring. A simple but uncompromising message that workers have power when they stand together and demand fair pay and conditions.

While it’s sad to remember the assassination of President Kennedy today, on the very same day (22nd November 1963) Belfast born writer C. S. Lewis died. A death that went virtually unnoticed at the time because of the events in Dallas. A very thoughtful and clever man.
There is a real incongruence in the claim that saying a new Ireland is in touching distance is ‘unhelpful’ then in the next breath saying ‘the union is safe’. Why can some folks not see that? Both constitutional aspirations are equally valid, so why is only one ‘unhelpful’?
Nollaig shona dhuit! It’s been a tough year for me, but I am optimist at heart. A new year means new opportunities. May 2024 be a year of growth, prosperity and happiness for you and yours. 🎄 🎅
Enjoyed catching up with friends and colleagues at the Lagan Valley constituency group meeting this evening. Particularly my good friend Johnny McCarthy who I haven’t seen in too long!
Very encouraging update from Matthew O’Toole MLA. As leader of the opposition his constructive approach holding the Executive to account will have a really positive impact on our politics.
Excited to get involved in the campaign to re-elect Claire Hanna MP. She has not only been an important and effective voice at Westminster, but a hard constituency worker across South Belfast and Mid Down. Reverting to a DUP MP is unconscionable. Get involved!

No, the sea border is the outcome of Brexit. Madness on behalf of unionists to support it. This was all spelt out ahead of the referendum.
Labour leader Ivana Bacik has said a merger with the Social Democrats is “possible”, as she claimed there were no ideological differences between the two parties.
Photo opps just won’t cut it anymore. We face incredible challenges and we need costed plans to address them. 100 days in and the Executive still hasn’t developed a program for government. We have to demand better.
It's 100 days since Stormont was reformed. There has been positive imagery, but no clear plan or indication of when we will get one.
Today the SDLP Opposition presses the Executive parties to tell us when they will deliver a Programme for Government.
It feels like the lows outweighed the highs for me in 2023. Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. I wish you all a 2024 brimming with success, progress and joy. I’m feeling optimistic for better things to come.

The Good Friday Agreement is crystal clear at least on this point. It is the people of Ireland, North and South who will determinate our constitutional future. Sin é.

At a packed Belfast Association meeting of the NASUWT. Don’t think I’ve ever seen such a large turnout. Teachers have had enough of being paid significantly less than their counterparts in the South of Ireland, Scotland England and Wales. I fear there will be a mass Exodus.

Grateful today and everyday for the peace secured on this day back in 1998. Peace is not something to be complacent about or take for granted. We need to keep working to secure a better future all.
Worrying news emerging about long agreed funding for South Belfast integrated primaries, inc Forge IPS new build & a needed extension at Millennium, being cut as part of the financial package agreed for the new Executive. We will be seeking urgent clarity for worried parents.
My youngest and his pals are proud as punch to be singing on the Peace Proms this evening at the SSE arena. Looking forward to a good night of music and celebration.

This is despicable. I’ve known William since before he was a broadcaster and he is and always has been a decent warm person. He brings a sophistication and nuance that this place badly needs. Solidarity.
A lot of politicians have got used to selfies and sound bites when there was no executive. They have forgotten what they were elected to do- that this is the time to deliver and move beyond aspirations and non-binding motions.
Demand is already billions ahead of what is available.
MLAs are proposing a number of policies without paying for them.
No government can operate like this and be effective.

The incident today in Parnell street is absolutely horrific. Utterly devastating for the children and their families. However, I’m at a loss as to why people think attacking the police and wrecking the place is the appropriate response. What will that achieve?
This is why teachers and lecturers will be on strike on Wednesday. Completely unjust and unsustainable. Would not be tolerated anywhere else on these islands.

Adjusted for inflation, teachers' salaries have fallen dramatically compared with both private and public sector workers in NI. In real terms, private sector salaries in 2023 have fallen 3.6% since 2019, public sector incomes down 5.8%, but teacher salaries are down by 17.5%.
The UK government are offering the DUP a chance to go back into the Executive while saving face with a ‘win’. Will they do it? It seems like they never miss a chance to miss a chance.
