Hope you’ll take a few mins out of your day to give this a listen.
We summarize current cancer screening recommendations.
Please share!
Thank you
@MSNBC_reports
@jdbalart
Colon cancer rates are increasing among younger people. It is the deadliest cancer for men under 50 and second most for women under 50.
@VinGuptaMD
explains what you could do to protect yourself and your loved ones.
Quickly getting access to monoclonal antibody therapy when you’re the fully vaccinated, asymptomatic Governor of Texas shows just how anxious and scared
@GregAbbott_TX
actually is of a virus that he constantly downplays.
Hope Texans take note.
I’ve spent my career in public health: as a clinician, researcher and military officer. I’ve had several failures and some wins.
And yet, having Ted Cruz, Laura Ingraham, and Tucker Carlson repeatedly attack me in the last 24 hours is perhaps the clearest sign of real impact
You don’t start dexamethasone, Remdesivir and given an experimental antibody cocktail to the President in the setting of low oxygen “dips” unless there’s COVID Pneumonia.
What did his chest imaging show? The American people deserve basic information on their President
Over the last 2 years, have felt a shared connectedness to many of you as we navigate this difficult world.
In that spirit, I couldn’t help but share the news of the arrival of our baby boy, Aarin.
Parenthood is such a journey. Sending lots of love and light to you.
I was informed that
@TuckerCarlson
mentioned me yet again on his show this evening.
I’m confident they were kind words.
His strong and persistent interest in the field of Pulmonology is duly noted and will be kept very much in mind.
Since many have asked today, all approved covid vaccinations are VERY effective in preventing normal lungs (on the L) from looking like ones that need life support (on the R)
Please pass it on: the brand doesn’t matter, as all will prevent severe illness from occurring.
My dad, a few hours north of New Delhi, tested + for coronavirus with a high viral load 4 weeks ago. He was fully vaxed, had mild symptoms, didn’t progress. He’s ~ 80
Two of our relatives, not yet vaxed, otherwise healthy, < 50 yrs, were also + and sadly just passed
Get vaxed!
I get my vaccine tomorrow and I’m grateful to the scientists who labored to make this day happen
After the 2nd dose 21 days later, I will continue masking, distancing and avoiding travel, until Dr Fauci says otherwise.
Stay vigilant, ignore the noise, normalcy is ahead.
Chest CT film from my very young, unvaccinated patient with severe covid, now requiring 100% oxygen.
EVERY patient on life support with covid in our hospital has yet to receive the vaccine.
I bet all of them thought they didn’t need it.
Get the vaccine!
Teachers and support staff in schools should be fully vaccinated before they’re expected to return to in-person instruction.
Doing otherwise is wrong and unjust to teachers nationwide.
Senator
@JohnFetterman
is the best of us.
He’s faced medical challenges and his recovery has been microanalyzed by every political commentator, all for political purposes.
As a clinician, I see a remarkable story of courage and resilience.
His example is one to emulate and…
I’ve practiced at the ICU bedside in WA, AZ and OH since Mar 2020, going with teams of skilled providers to areas of need.
Each time, we see the same story play out: lungs on the R ⬇️that could be saved by 2-doses of a vaccine.
Given the continued anxious headlines today, here’s your daily reminder to be reassured that the vaccines are doing their job really well and keeping vaxed folks out of the hospital and away from pulmonologists like me.
If that changes, I will quickly say so.
Stay hopeful ☀️
1/
I’m currently in a covid unit near a college town.
What I’ve seen since arriving must be shown to all younger people who think they’re invincible
The median age of my 13 patients is ~ 40. The sickest is a mid-30s patient, about to get a tracheostomy with Guillain-Barre
Rehabilitation after a stroke is hardwork and can take time.
The real experts in neurology will tell you that.
By that measure,
@JohnFetterman
is doing just fine, and I admire his strength and resiliency.
We need more of his example in public life.
This isn’t “MSNBC’s bizarre” claim.
It’s what every serious health expert and scientist is currently recommending for now, subject to change as we learn more.
Also, Joy didn’t say it. I did.
I’d be happy to walk you through the data, Senator.
.
@JoyAnnReid
you either didn’t bother to read the tweet or you’re deliberately misleading your viewers.
I wasn’t opposing the vaccine; I intend to take it.
I was responding to MSNBC’s bizarre claim that—AFTER you take the vaccine—you should still NOT travel & MUST wear a mask.
Two very gracious
@Delta
flight attendants approached me on a flight today expressing concern about the federal plane mask mandate possibly ending April 18
And they wanted help in trying to get it extended, at least until their young kids get shots
Hard to argue with reason!
Vivek Ramaswamy does not represent the Indian American diaspora in anyway whatsoever.
Most of us are repulsed by his obvious misogyny and complete ignorance of all matters geopolitics, climate, military, even health.
America has and deserves way better.
Only people in suits who spend all their time in gilded offices or jetsetting — and whose sole aim in life is the desperate pursuit of power — would tweet this nonsense, intended to divide, definitely not intended to heal.
Dr. Fauci lied about masks in March
Dr. Fauci has been distorting the level of vaccination needed for herd immunity
It isn’t just him
Many in elite bubbles believe the American public doesn’t know “what’s good for them” so they need to be tricked into “doing the right thing”
If you’re undecided about the vaccine, pls keep in mind:
Being unvaccinated on June 9, 2021 is much more risky to your own wellbeing than being unvaccinated on June 9, 2020.
With how quickly this virus is changing, it’ll be even riskier if you wait any longer.
Since I’ve seen this advice be given multiple times privately:
If you received the 1-dose J&J, go and get 1-shot of Pfizer or Moderna as a “booster” when you’re able
Most I know who got J&J are doing it and are telling others the same — since two seems better than 1 re: delta
The lungs of the unvaccinated have never been more vulnerable to devastating injury than at this moment, 2 years into the pandemic with an ever-changing and more dangerous threat upon us.
If there’s any certainty, it’s that.
Healthy lungs on the L, covid-ridden lungs on the R
3/ This virus impacts different people differently. There’s a lot of uncertainty and a lot we don’t know, but otherwise healthy younger people are absolutely vulnerable.
Remain vigilant and get the vaccine. Don’t risk doing otherwise. You have your entire life ahead of you.
As the headlines start to pour in on waning vaccine effectiveness against Omicron, please remember:
These vaccines are best at keeping you out of hospitals and ICUs, not preventing a positive test or mild symptoms.
Please take the headlines with a large grain of salt.
Some proof of genuine public service should be required before the pursuit of elected office.
Wear our country’s uniform, teach in a classroom, care for the sick, be a first responder, something, anything that shows you likely mean what you say when you ask for a vote or $.
The rejection of real, genuine expertise is what led us to today.
So misguided to see people like
@MeghanMcCain
calling for the replacement of Dr Fauci.
We should be empowering and amplifying his message to get out of this crisis and avoid any further milestones.
Given the degree of outreach and questions, wanted to emphasize that for all of you with chronic “immunosuppressive” conditions (rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, scleroderma, many others), please stay vigilant and masked in public even if you’re fully vaccinated.
The anti-smoking campaign has been successful because it’s been clear, concise and leveraged visceral images that convey fact, not opinion.
We need to double down on these effective tactics and recruit more authentic messengers to give context and meaning to these images.
In a hospital, located in a state that recently loosened mask mandates, our team today admitted another young patient with the X-ray below.
2 days ago, this person was fine. Today, an ICU was needed.
Deaths from covid are not preordained. Pls protect yourself.
If you’re an unvaccinated adult, you should be given 4 additional weeks to get your first shot.
If you choose not to, you’ve forfeited your *extended priority* access to a global good and those excess doses should be sent overseas.
Scarcity will be motivating.
In the last 2 weeks, I’ve had fellow “docs” criticize me for getting the msg out on monoclonal antibodies.
I’ve also had angry parents write my employers trying to block me from speaking to teachers about their right to priority vax.
Ignore the haters. Time will vindicate.
Since I’ve been asked, let me be clear:
No union has or will ever pay me to say that teachers and staff, esp those at high risk, deserve priority vax in all 50 states.
With 4K dying daily, and new strains adding uncertainty, I said it because it’s common sense and decent.
I got attacked by
@TuckerCarlson
and
@tedcruz
for saying that I would continue to mask and remain vigilant post-vax
Now, I need to say that I’m not getting $ for saying that school staff deserve priority vax.
Courage to do and say the right thing will always guide me.
@katetaylornyt
@VinGuptaMD
Dr. Gupta was never hired nor paid by our union for the public health guidance he provided concerning the safe resumption of in-person learning.
2/ This is a rare syndrome that can be a complication of viral infections like that from covid.
It essentially causes full body paralysis that often does not fully recover.
This patient was otherwise completely healthy, athletic, loved to travel.
I know the world is filled with indescribable trauma.
So perhaps more than ever, sharing my gratitude to my selfless co-workers across the spectrum of healthcare, to my loving wife, and without a doubt, to my two little boys.
Here’s to a Prosperous and Healthy Thanksgiving!
In Fresno today - talking to factory workers who had questions about the vaccine — no one was vaccine “hesitant.”
They just had questions and wanted them answered in a non-judgmental, non-finger wagging way.
Simple townhalls like this - not mass messaging - can be effective
Since I’ve gotten this Q many times today:
If you are 3x vaccinated and taking all the usual pandemic-related precautions that you’re sick of hearing at this point (high quality masks, vigilance), you can/should travel to see loved ones.
You are safe and mental health matters
I was lucky enough to see my aging parents in Toledo, OH this weekend, a brief peaceful reprieve from a chaotic existence.
Maybe I’m just nostalgic but being back near them reminded me why parents are so special. Regardless of what you may achieved their love is unconditional.
As we’re learning more about Omicron and see what’s happening in many hospitals across the US, 1 simple truth has remained constant from the very beginning:
These vaccines are doing their job, they keep nearly everyone out of the hospital, and that is a great success story ☀️
60% of the forests burning on the west coast, causing the toxic fumes WE are inhaling, are under federal control.
The inaction is yours, Mr President
@realDonaldTrump
Maybe I’m wrong, but I haven’t seen a one highly respected Infectious Disease specialist or any of my fellow Pulmonologists/Intensivists constantly use this platform or media to “urge” normal while 12K + Americans die weekly
Guess you need to actually see it to be humbled by it
I’m just a medical analyst for
@MSNBC
@NBCNews
but I’m so proud to be part of these two great news organizations.
Their decision today to admit a mistake and course correct is further proof of their commitment to integrity and excellence.
6 weeks ago, I ran into my freshman year college roommate, Teddy Van Beuren. It was out of the blue, I hadn’t seen him in awhile.
Yet, he was the same kind, charismatic and gentle person I always knew him to be.
I just learned he passed away unexpectedly.
Life is so fragile
The revised quarantining guidance to 5 days if you test positive makes a lot of sense IF you’re triple vaccinated and asymptomatic, since breakthroughs will be our new normal.
Surprised this guidance also applies the unvaccinated. That seems a step too far, too soon.
More people across the US would benefit from CPAP for undiagnosed sleep apnea.
The President using CPAP for sleep apnea is a non-story. Good for him and bravo to his docs for what I’m sure was the appropriate recommendation.
Scoop: Biden has begun using a CPAP machine, per sources. The device is to treat longstanding sleep apnea, one of the people said. As Biden departed the White House this morning for Chicago, indentations from the CPAP straps could be seen on his face. Story by
@jendeben
and me.
When I get asked about vaccine efficacy, esp against new strains, I think about these CT scans from a recent patient of mine.
In the span of 6 days, literal holes developed where there was once lung tissue. This person died on life support
Vaccines prevent this from happening
AR-15s are meant for military purposes, and no other.
Want access?
Sign up, go through basic training, learn proper use, safety, and code of ethics before you ever lay your hands on one.
Civilian access must be banned.
Honor, respect, and gratitude to the great Dr Anthony Fauci.
Comments levied against his personal safety this morning should cross everyone’s moral red line. Completely unacceptable, regardless of your political affiliation.
Regarding concerns about
@JoeBiden
resuming travel today:
1. He was not a *close* contact of POTUS (defined as within 6 ft).
2. He did get tested today with a high quality PCR test.
3. He practices the right behavior publicly each time and his events follow suit.
Feel incredibly lucky to have spent part of this afternoon with Gen Barry McCaffrey,
@mccaffreyr3
He is a legend and I spent the time we had trying to learn as much as I could from him.
Thank you for the time today, General.
A helpful New Years resolution for all media must be to stop leading every covid story with daily case totals
Vaccines against contagious respiratory viruses avert deaths and hospitalizations, not necessarily positive tests
Thats why we get the flu shot, and now the covid shot
Q: What’s the opposite of evidence based (and ethical) medicine?
A: A pre-taped telehealth visit with a non-covid “expert” to provide “clearance” for another super-spreader event.
One thing I didn’t expect from fatherhood is gaining a newfound appreciation for garbage trucks.
Between trash truck on Netflix, truck toys, and needing to follow them on their weekly routes, my little man can’t get enough.
Anyone with similar experiences? 😆🤷🏽♂️
Being both an ICU doc and military officer leaves no room for nuance on American gun control.
Weapons of war are meant for actual war or first response.
Civilians can and should live without access, period. That’s what much of the rest of the world does.
I received these notes today from a family I didn’t know just 4 weeks ago.
It’s the best Xmas gift, one I wasn’t expecting
It reminded me that, despite all the awesome scientific power of modern medicine, real impact can be had at the beside, through comfort and reassurance
We just flipped a patient with severe covid pneumonia on their belly (“proning”)
After 8+ months of this awful virus, the only “miracle cure” that exists is having nurses, RTs, and docs perform TLC like this. There’s no drug (yet). And these providers are in diminishing supply
For all the parents like me with young kiddos at home wondering if it’s safe for your fully vaccinated self to unmask in the presence of your unvaccinated kids, it is.
In the extremely rare event you still get infected, you will not have enough virus in you to pass it on to them
Trying to get a vax appt for my 72 year old mom in OH reminded me of waiting for tickets to go live for a sought after concert.
Midnight EDT release, constant refreshing, slots gone just when you think you have one
What a hard process, esp if you don’t have family to help!
Vaccines against contagious respiratory viruses, like Flu and now COVID, are supposed to keep people out of hospitals and away from ventilators.
That is their historical barometer of success.
They are not intended to prevent a positive test.
Especially in light of tonight’s horrific events, basic life support training should be free and readily accessible to every single adult nationwide.
We may all be in a position where we need help one day.
And proximity to skilled help isn’t a guarantee.
Everyone has been impacted by this pandemic.
Ignore the political sideshows, tonight is an important night.
Cannot wait to get my shot on Wednesday and for you to get yours in the coming days and weeks.
Light is ahead.
My wife, a pediatrician, saw 80 patients over the course of the last 3 days.
That’s not including the effort it takes to answer parents’ questions, all somehow in 15 mins.
Bless pediatricians, nurses, teachers and all the many who deserve far higher pay for their critical work
Most elected officials — and their media protectors — that are against an assault weapons ban haven’t actually ever worn the uniform of this country or been in law enforcement.
They like the false optics of courage without having any courage of conviction.
People I don’t know in India are reaching out, through loved ones, sending screenshots for meds they seek or for me to read a chest x-ray or to approach leaders to send more O2.
It’s desperation on a scale I think few have observed.
We must do more, now.
I would love to see actual pediatric experts - and there are many - guide the discussion in media on when it’s safe for kids to unmask in schools.
The AAP is pretty clear right now
Let’s listen to those who have the right expertise on the topic, not those seeking airtime
Know everyone - each family - has sacrificed a lot mentally and emotionally over the last 2 years.
Merriest Christmas to all those who celebrate today. And warm and safe holiday tidings to everyone.
Lots of light and hope ahead.☀️
Weapons of war are meant for war.
No one - outside those who’ve sacrificed a lot to join the uniformed services - has any business accessing a semi-automatic assault rifle.
Assault-like rifles must be banned for civilian use. The alternative is unacceptable.
I know I don’t occupy an important office that can add heft to this advice:
Yet, in hearing accounts of packed airports and seeing full ICUs first hand, I gain nothing by saying: please don’t travel and protect you and your loved ones; & avoid indoor dinners. You are not immune
A close friend who I care a lot about, just lost — in the span of a few days— both parents to this virus
I’m writing this in tribute to her, who despite unimaginable grief, remains focused on helping others, while showing such rare resilience
Talk about proud parents.
I had a sick patient who unexpectedly had a cardiac arrest and died during a prolonged code this week.
The family witnessed it all, and was, as expected, stricken with grief. All of us on the medical side continue to feel the same.
Life is fragile.
*Love* your loved ones
Growing up in Toledo, I definitely took AC for granted.
On this 110 F day in non-AC Seattle, I appreciate and am grateful for this splash pad. As is my cockapoo and toddler 🙌🙌🙌
Stay cool, Seattle 💧
In the last 2 weeks, 5 close friends have lost a parent, 3 to covid. This doesn’t include the pts I cared for during that time, some near death, all parents
When I read the subject line to this email, I hesitated for more bad news. So happy it’s not.
Pls stay alert and vigilant
When “experts” say that
#COVID19
doesn’t exist on surfaces so don’t worry so much about hand hygiene, or when
@VP
says ppl like me have overblown this crisis, ignore them. I’m about to place a large needle into a 30 year old with covid on life support. We are all at risk.
I’m a constituent of Rep Jayapal.
The ability to exude empathy and clearly articulate right versus wrong - especially when interviewed on national TV - feels like a basic requirement of elected office.
Disappointing that something that should be so natural feels so forced.
This is what happens when you remain unvaccinated: you gotta deal with us on a ventilator in the back of a C17.
That’s a lot worse than the middle seat in the back of a commercial plane.
And hello, Arizona. We appreciate you and your hospitality ☀️☀️
#CCATT
Thank you to the great Brian Williams and your incredibly gifted team for your commitment and grace in giving viewers informed health journalism over these 2+ years.
I never planned on being a small part of that effort and I’m beyond grateful for all of it.
We will miss you.
Thread
1/ Just received a call from my 77 year fully vaccinated father, who is outside New Delhi. He’s with my extended family, some of whom are covid + and ill, and developed mild symptoms. He tested positive today
I’m grateful he’s vaccinated and hopeful he doesn’t progress
The Omicron variant is forcing us to reckon now with a reality that was inevitable
No vax against a changing and contagious resp virus ever fully prevents positive tests. By design, they save lives. That’s success
So onward with your safe and vigilant holiday travel planning.
Best job in the world - working with some of the most talented ICU respiratory therapists and nurses in service to our beautiful country
@usairforce
#CCATT
The first few months of ‘22 are likely to be difficult, and endless coverage of daily case loads will only serve to increase our daily cortisol levels without providing much new meaning.
But this will be a year of promise and renewal.
Stay vigilant and stay hopeful.
Protecting your health is clearly a trend.
Appreciate my seat neighbor leading by example.
Respiratory viruses are everywhere right now, protect yourself and your family.
Again, thank you to
@maddow
on highlighting the need to utilize monoclonal antibodies tonight for early covid in high risk patients
I’ve gotten many testimonials, like this below, in the last many weeks
Please go to or DM me and we will find you access
"Eli Lilly and Co said on Wednesday that its combination antibody therapy to fight COVID-19 reduced the risk of hospitalization and death by 87% in a study of more than 750 high-risk COVID-19 patients."
As an ICU doc, both as a civilian and as a USAF reservist, I remain grateful to receiving the vaccine upfront due to risk of exposure.
Teachers and school staff in all 50 states (not just 24 of them) absolutely deserve the same consideration. And now, especially as schools open
When someone says we need a better pandemic response, this is part of what that looks like.
Proud to serve with such honorable and selfless ICU military medical corps members. And it’s a great day for a training flight on the west coast.
I didn’t grow up with magnatiles but I wish I did.
Spent hours with my little man building contraptions like this; and I think I may have enjoyed play time more than him ;) highly recommend!!! Especially for these pandemic holidays
I’m enjoying lefty blue checkmarks losing their minds over this tweet, dishonestly claiming that I’m “attacking the military.”
Uh, no. We have the greatest military on earth, but Dem politicians & woke media are trying to turn them into pansies.
The new Dem videos are terrible.
Mr Floyd suffered a PEA arrest because he was suffocated. Low oxygen is a common cause of that.
He didn’t have a coronary “occlusion” - causing Vfib/Vtach, requiring an electrical shock.
Cherry-picking medical data to cause confusion won’t change that reality.
After 13 years + in some type of medical training, I thought I was done being a student
But being an ICU flight doc means constantly learning, especially from your peers, and staying humble
I’ve learned so much from this gamely crew during a challenging time. I have no regrets.
To say “most” Americans need a THIRD shot of a mRNA vaccine based on data from Israel showing that 2-doses still provides > 90% protection several months out is wrong.
THIRD doses for the immunocompromised and > 65 is fine; FIRST doses for the rest of the world.
