Interesting interview. As Nietzsche said, there are no facts, only interpretations. Funnelling millions into stopping gambling and pretending to be a friend of racing takes some gumption.
🎙️Industry Special - 'Taxation On Gambling' Lee sits down with former professional poker player & 'gambling tax' reformer Derek Webb, for his take on why things need to be done & how racing as an industry needs to fight for it's survival. Link ⬇️.

Don’t enjoy tweeting politics but someone needs to call out this nonsense. It’s no wonder trust in politics is so low when our government sends out propaganda like this. Technically true, but very misleading at the same time
With Labour, the number of asylum seekers living in hotels is down by 43%, compared with September 2023. We’re cleaning up the mess the Tories left behind.

Wrote about this a while ago on LinkedIn. The facts about uk gambling are that it’s smaller and safer now than before online casinos and FOBTs. The facts just don’t match the antis narrative.

UK gambling; smaller, safer, better Placing a bet isn’t just about cold hard logic, there tends to be a mixture of emotional and rational drivers. Anyone who has enjoyed a winning team bet at the...
Before all the anti-harm regulations the numbers did not back the 'casino in the pocket' causes more gambling harm story. My prediction is the more regulations forced on gambling the more the black market will grow and the problem gambler rates will go up.

The uncomfortable truth that many like to ignore - racing is funded by GGY, which is otherwise known as gross player losses. Punters need to lose money for funding to racing to grow. This is possible by improving the product and promotion. It’s not possible by hammering bookies.
'a reduction in gross gambling yield which was the point of their reforms!'. Why is anyone in racing siding with reformers when racing is financed by gross gambling yield? Racing needs betting to survive.

Damaging bookies damages racing. It really is as simple as that. Not sure how people even concoct these counter arguments, but @AKBets been consistently right on this.
Another thicko. Horse racing can trace its major decline to the policies around Affordability advocated for by this lot. As with Affordability I’m not lobbying anyone. I’m telling you what will happen and how bookmakers will react. Horse Racing will decline further.

One of the most common-sense outlines of this issue. Whatever people think of the merits, the proposed wealth tax is essentially asking the richest in society (who likely already pay the most tax) to pay an average of £600k a year more for the pleasure of living here.
A serious question- would you move overseas for £600K per year? Imagine being offered whatever you’re earning now PLUS £50k per month if you’re willing to move somewhere new. Would you do it? . That is the deal the UK government wants to put before the wealthiest people in the.

Setting aside the principles of a wealth tax (there’s plenty of debate about that), the practical elements like this are just mind boggling.
Question for supporters of a wealth tax. Assume I have a £200,000 tax bill because someone has (somehow) valued my private company at £20m . If I have to sell shares in order to meet pay it, and realise a capital gain in doing so, are you still expecting me to pay capital gains.

Gambling is enjoyed by over 20 million people in the country. Not just safely, but it massively enhances their lives. Stigmatising gambling as a public health ill is totally wrong, and is more likely to lead to greater gambling harm as it’s pushed underground.
In a new pamphlet 'Where's the Harm?', @BeccyCooper4Lab calls on the government to approach gambling harms as a public health issue 🧵

Racing podcasts as competitive as the royal hunt cup, but this one does a good job of covering big industry issues in a balanced and informative way.

- State school teachers down not up.- Children forced out of schools in the middle of academic year.- Loss of high quality education. Total failure already, and getting worse. A policy of spite and levelling down that damages the country. Taxing education is impossible to justify.
Labour promised to end tax exemptions for private schools. We delivered that promise. Now, we’re moving that money to where it belongs: into state schools up and down the country.

The most important point in this discussion.
Increased taxation on horse racing or slots is a bad idea on every metric. The UK has a world leading regulated channelisation rate VS Black Market. That means lots of tax is paid because operators have an incentive to be here. Not sure this is rocket science, but if the Black.
