I think that’s the point. The question is what is “us?” - There are so many versions of blackness that need to be explored. This monolith idea of blackness is a pre conceived notion. I sold a million records in the USA and my shows were filled with many versions of blackness …
I mean - genuine question…. do you feel like you were marketed/presented in a way for “us”?

I was on the set of the first Pussycat doll music video after a day in the studio recording vocals on their album. This was 6 years before I even released a record! All the backing vocals on this album are me and I also wrote the song I don’t need a man.

It’s an old fashion term to suggest a certain type of music is for black and a certain music is not. Music should be fluid and free. I’m not saying to entirely eliminate culture pillars but I’m saying let’s not ring fence it with assumptions of who we are.

People don’t know. They see a v v brown from 2009 and fill in the gaps. Life got dark and I lost myself after kids despite ❤️ing being a mum. The doctor said I had a 90% chance of diabetes. So I lost 10 stone. I found myself again. I started saying yes to things again.
