Went to the doctor today. Told them I felt worn down, tired, and constantly stressed. Doctor said: "I’ve got an easy fix. Check out this new game called Balatro. It’s a roguelike deckbuilder and the talk of the town. That’ll pick you up." But doctor…

Hell, I love cane sugar Coke, as it has a slightly different viscosity. But the sugar content is functionally the same. They don’t put any less in the bottle by using an alternative. Coke just uses the cheapest available products in their manufacturing hubs. 3/3

However, there’s really no firmly conclusive evidence that corn syrup is worse for the body. It’s just glucose, while cane sugar is a bit of a mix between sucrose and glucose. They’re simple sugars, your body is breaking them down the same. 2/3

Want to know why Coke uses corn syrup in the US? It’s the same reason they put ethanol in gasoline and feed our livestock corn. Federal subsidies, which keep the agricultural industry pumping. I’m all for the elimination of those subsidies, but no sane R is going to do it. 1/3

Want to know how to make Americans healthier? Widespread infrastructure improvement. Food insecurity is a product of distribution, not production. Caloric dense, preservative-filled foods became common place mostly due to subsidies, but also because of their shelf life.

The price of eggs has risen by about 28% in the past year, largely due to outbreaks of avian flu. Those prices could continue to climb during the holidays, as demand for baked goods increases.

My brother worked for an egg farm a year or so back when the outbreak was still in full swing. The look on his face when an outbreak was mentioned said it all. He didn’t even need to tell me those buildings were culled. Just an absolutely miserable set of circumstances. 10/?

Guess who controls this. The Department of Agriculture. Can you take a guess on who’s trying to get rid of the DOA? 9/?

So how do we prevent this from happening again in the future? Wouldn’t you know it, the answer is actually government regulation! New biosecurity measures including increasing cleaning standards and limiting the number of poultry that can be tightly packed together. 8/?

Companies who may not have lost any birds at all will still hike prices in *anticipation* of potential future loss, alongside controlling the stock that hits the market. So they may increase prices despite virtually no change to operational costs or reported losses. 7/?

Now, losing a flock is obviously devastating to a farmer. But egg farming is a tightly managed industry controlled primarily by a handful of vertically integrated companies. The price hike is due to the flu, but it’s also due to ✨market speculation✨. 6/?

So when you see numbers like “100 million infected”, there’s a pretty good chance they didn’t test all of those birds and are going off of the reported number that were euthanized. 5/?

Bird flu is a serious matter, and what they don’t exactly announce from the rooftops is that when an outbreak is detected they cull the entire building or flock as a precautionary measure. Since those birds are tightly packed in large quantities, that can mean thousands. 4/?
