Stress is complicated, right? @USkupio @ampolter & I had a hard think about the way acute & chronic stress impacts the different neural populations in the VTA & I’m really pleased with what we came up with. Just published in TINS. Check it out! https://t.co/HpJbQzmi8f

This is a great story about what astrocytes and cannabinoids have to do with social transmission of stress in mice, be sure to check it out! Big congratulations Paula and all co-authors!

My PhD is out in @NatureComms! We showed that social transmission of stress in male mice impairs memory retrieval through a mitoCB1 mechanism in olfactory bulb astrocytes. Special thanks to @MarsicanoLab and @stressynomics, and to all the people involved! https://t.co/W01CgmoypI

Instead, our data indicates that corticosterone-induced impairment of object recognition relies on CB1-dependent regulation of mitochondrial calcium dynamics. This suggests that exogenous and endogenous cannabinoids might act through different mechanisms in the brain! 4/4

We assumed that the molecular mechanism of this impairment relies on CB1-dependent regulation of mitochondrial respiration, as seen with exogenous cannabinoid injection (as shown in Hebert-Chatelain et al, Nature, 2016), however, to our surprise...🥁 it doesn't! 3/4

First, we found that injection of corticosterone impairs novel object recognition during consolidation and retrieval in mice through mitochondria-associated CB1 receptors in 2 different cellular populations: LC noradrenergic and hippocampal GABAergic cells, respectively. 2/4

Astrocytes have a functional and diverse endocannabinoid system. Cannabinoids are able to interact with astrocytes to modulate their functions and their communication with neurons.
