During the early planning for the Tyne & Wear Metro in the 1970’s demolishing part of Whitley Bay Station was discussed. This image shows the clock tower was to remain however the station facilities are the standard shelters and ticket areas of the time.

1977: Construction of the Tyne & Wear Metro Byker Viaduct, which would span the Ouseburn Valley between newly built stations at Manors and Byker. This section of line opened to passengers on the 14th November 1982. 📸
