On this day in 1941, Lt. Gov. Coke Stevenson became governor of Texas when Governor O'Daniel resigned. Stevenson was self-made. He studied history and bookkeeping by campfire light, worked as a bank janitor and then a cashier, studied law at night and passed the bar exam in 1913.

On this day in 1731, Capt. Juan Antonio Pérez de Almazán, the commander of San Antonio de Béxar Presidio, presided over what was probably the first election in Texas history. On August 1 the new city council met to elect alcaldes, and electoral politics was off and running.

On this day in 1965, Tarrant County Junior College (@TCCollege ) was founded. The South Campus opened in 1967, a Northeast Campus at Hurst in 1968, a Northwest Campus on the north edge of Marine Creek Lake in 1975, and a fourth campus in Arlington in 1996.

On this day in 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act, which established the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (@NASA ). The Manned Space Center opened in 1963 and was officially renamed the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center.

On this day in 1908, James Harper Gillett made his first appearance as a novillero, or apprentice matador, at the bullring in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Gillett, the son of Texas Ranger James B. Gillett, was born in Ysleta, Texas, in 1884.

On this day in 1974, the restored Ashton Villa, one of the first brick structures in Texas, was opened to the public. The historic Galveston home was built in 1859 by James Moreau Brown. The home is administered by the Galveston Historical Foundation.

On this day in 1880, the town of Kyle was established when David E. Moore and Fergus Kyle (for whom the town was named) deeded 200 acres for a townsite to the International-Great Northern Railroad.

On this day in 1966, rancher and writer Cordia Duke died. She taught school as a teenager in the Oklahoma Territory before moving to Sherman County, Texas, to teach in a one-room school near the XIT Ranch. In the 1920s she was appointed the first woman game warden in Texas.

On this day in 1944, Lawrence Aaron Nixon walked into the same El Paso polling place that had denied him his ballot twenty years before and voted in a Democratic primary. The black physician and voting rights advocate was born in Marshall, Texas, in 1884.

On this day in 1982, architect O'Neil Ford died in San Antonio. Ford was born near Sherman in 1905. Though he had only two years of college and subsequently took a correspondence course in architecture, his lack of university training became part of his mystique.

On this day in 1876, the Texas and Pacific Railway completed its line into Fort Worth. T&P hired Welshman Morgan Jones to complete the line before the legislature adjourned. The success made the Welshman a local hero and marked the beginning of a new era of growth for Fort Worth.

On this day in 1945, Clara Driscoll died in Corpus Christi. She was born in 1881 in St. Mary's, Texas. After almost a decade of study and travel abroad, she returned to Texas at the age of eighteen. From 1903 to 1905 she worked with the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT).

On this day in 1938, Howard Hughes and a four-man crew landed their specially equipped Lockheed 14 in New York City, having circled the globe in three days, nineteen hours, and seventeen minutes. Half of Lindbergh's record for crossing the Atlantic. Hughes was born in Houston.

On this day in 1859, Juan Nepomuceno Cortina shot Brownsville city marshal Robert Shears, who had brutally arrested a former employee of Cortina's, and set off what became known as the first Cortina War. Cortina was born in Tamaulipas in 1824.

On this day in 1943, Baylor College of Medicine opened in a former Sears, Roebuck store in Houston. The school, the only private medical school in the southwest, was founded in Dallas in 1900 as the University of Dallas Medical Department.
