Turkey pluckers wait for work to start in Brownwood, 1939. Man, plucking turkeys all day, every day, day in, day out .... might be the kind of thing that would have you trying to figure a way out. Taken by Russell Lee.

If you're one of those lazy, slofhful people like me but you still want to make something for your Thanksgiving celebration that will make the eyeballs of your guests/friends/family roll back in their heads, make sopapilla cheesecake. This recipe was taught to me about 20 years

Traces of Texas reader Jordan Reese graciously shared this image. I liked the image a lot but I LOVED Jordan's caption. Says Jordan: "These are my great-grandparents, Roy Shaefer and Anita Kozelsky. Their story began in 1949 when they met at a lively dance held at a small

The Arcane Texas Fact of the Day is deliciously arcane and involves this cannon, which was on the Liberty County courthouse lawn for 20 or so years: After World War I, the U.S. government suddenly found itself sitting on hundreds of captured German artillery pieces. The Army

Traces of Texas reader Mark Peyton was nice enough to submit this wonderful family photo of the lumber store and post office in Frisco. Mark didn't say when this was taken but it looks to be about 1910 or so. Check out the wooden sidewalk going across the mucky road. That's one

A scene in a parking lot at a Texas A&M football game in 1949. It appears to be the tuba section. I heard it said many times that the people in the tuba section are the biggest partiers in any marching band. Don't know if that's a myth or not.

Cas Haley's is from Paris, Texas, and his version of "Walking on the Moon" by the Police is pretty righteous. Give it a listen and tell me if you agree. https://t.co/0cJGy5e1Tl

Traces of Texas reader Roger Cooner's parents were huge fans of the Aggies and attended the 1950 Texas-Texas A&M game at Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin. Roger found this program among their mementos. Is it just me or is some of the art on these old programs not fantastic?

Loading grapefruit in Weslaco, 1939. The physical labor it takes to feed a nation. Five days later, somebody in New York City bought one of these grapefruits, probably giving no thought to those who got it from the earth to the truck. I'm thankful for those who get down on their

The Highland Park Theater in San Antonio, 1937. It was built in 1928 and located at 1833 South Hackberry street. It was still operating in 1955. Not sure when it was torn down, but possibly when I-10 came through. Looks like a nice, comfortable place in 1937. The kids with the

The Arcane Texas Fact of the Day: 188 years ago today, on Nov. 25, 1837, the steamship "Columbia" arrived in Galveston as part of Charles Morgan's shipping fleet. The occasion marked the beginning of scheduled steamship travel in the Gulf of Mexico. By 1860, the Morgan Line had
