Why might a family member tell their story on a podcast with exploitative tendencies? How does Sarah create a safe space for victims & their family on @VFJPod ? What could ethical true crime look like? And what can consumers do to push the genre in this direction?

In my bonus interview with Sarah, she reflects on what she’s learned along the way, and answers critical questions from her own experience as both a victim’s family member and a true crime media creator herself.

So, in 2019, Sarah started @VFJPod as a way to tell Alissa’s story. In August 2020, an arrest was made in the case and Sarah’s efforts were recognized by the Maricopa County Attorney. Since the arrest, Sarah has shifted her focus to advocating for other cases in need of justice.

In 2001, @SarahETurney ' sister, Alissa, went missing. Nearly two decades later and no arrests in the case, the police told her they could no longer help her and she needed to get media coverage for the case.

Many of us will act as jurors in our lifetime, but jury nullification is something they won't tell you about when you get called to serve. It's so important that we fully understand the agency + power we hold as community members participating in the criminal legal process!

As Beyond Criminal Courts writes, "it is one approach that we can use, alongside many others, to disrupt the carceral state." If you're intrigued, I highly recommend learning more!

Jury nullification describes situations where jurors use their position to protest what they feel may be unjust extensions of the law. Using nullification, jurors can decide to acquit a person of criminal charges, even if they could technically be convicted based on the evidence.

If you've never heard of jury nullification, this toolkit from @CommJusticeExch and @interruptcrim is a great primer. I first learned of the concept as a high school debate coach and I truly believe it's something everyone should know about!
Ever heard of jury nullification? If not, you're not alone. It's often referred to as a "silent power" - judges and lawyers know jurors have it, but they never say so out loud. So what is it? Check out this🧵for more 1/6
