Never ceases to amaze me just how much Yuji Horii shaped the history of video games - not just once, but multiple times over. Between Portopia and Dragon Quest, I'm not sure there's any single game designer more impactful, particularly when it comes to narrative games.

Pretty cool to see Square Enix continuing to promote Paranormasight with behind-the-scenes interviews. Can only speak anecdotally, but it's great that the game seems to have found its audience.
Want to know how Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo was made? Find out here:
Still yet to play? It's available at a 40% discount on Nintendo Switch and Steam.
Pre-rendered 3D is something of a lost art, but it was a perfect fit for what we wanted to accomplish with our art direction.
What are you some your favorite uses of pre-rendered 3D in classic games? 👀

We're making an ADV/VN akin to Famicom Detective Club because it's just a great way to tell a story; curious players will be rewarded the most, as there are many hidden interactions...

Drama unfolds as you investigate the disappearance of a mysterious woman on a train:
It was important to us that our character sprites were very expressive, so they feel like they're performing the game's script like actors. So, what better way to figure out their posing than... acting them out?
I often wonder if other ADV devs take this approach 😅

Yellow paint discourse can't hurt me. It's merely an issue for AAA games, not small indies like us.
Totally unrelated, in our game, like Famicom Detective Club, commands with new submenu options are highlighted in yellow to alert players about new subjects to ask about/check. 🙂
Our ADV took inspiration from the SNES era, so we wondered what it might look like on SNES. But why wonder when you can just... port it to the SNES? 🤔

Any support/wishlists on Steam could help us bring the whole game to SNES:

We want to bring our game to as many platforms and languages as we can, and it all depends on our Steam release. Any help spreading the word is greatly appreciated! 😊
Christmas lasts until the 28th around these parts, to commemorate this historic event: on this day in 1979, door-to-door salesman Kyle Hyde decorated an artificial Christmas Tree in the storage room of the Hotel Dusk in Los Angeles, California. 🎄
We ported part of our game to the SNES. Why? Well... Why not? 🤷

Our adventure game releases later this year on Steam - who knows? If it goes well, maybe we can port the whole thing to SNES! Every wishlist helps:
What's everyone playing lately? 👀
I started Another Code: Recollection earlier this week, and have been fascinated by how much has changed from the original games - it really feels like its own unique experience. The new arrangements of the OST are great, too!
Thinking about Paranormasight, a real gem from last year and a great modern ADV. It has a very compelling narrative hook, some really unique gameplay concepts (love the panoramic backgrounds), and an absolutely gorgeous and varied musical score by Hidenori Iwasaki. Don't miss it!
Disappointed there's been no announcement for an Okhotsk ni Kiyu localization? Well... We may not be Yuji Horii, but we ARE making an old-school ADV just like the games of this era! #オホーツクに消ゆ

One cool aspect of Policenauts' ADV design is how it inverts the typical menu/check order. Instead of starting with a command menu and using a background check option, you select someone or something in the background first, which brings up a command menu for what you selected.
There are many shocking developments in our story, so the characters act accordingly... 😮

I keep this Dragon Quest artbook on my desk, and often look to it for inspiration while working. It's still so hard to believe we've lost Toriyama, but anytime I see his work, I'm reminded of the power of real human expression through art and how beautiful it is. What a master.

A fun fact - before settling on the idea for Ace Attorney, Shu Takumi pitched a detective ADV similar to Famicom Detective Club, according to this 2004 interview (translated by shmuplations).
I wonder what a traditional ADV directed by Shu Takumi might have looked like... 🤔
This video is a great primer on the history of the term "visual novel" and how it relates to adventure games - highly recommended, as it provides a lot of clarity on the genre and can help explain how our game relates to that history.
Today marks the 5th anniversary of my first YouTube video, The Origins of Visual Novels. At the time, I was frustrated at seeing titles like Ace Attorney pop up on some many visual novel lists. So I made a New Year's resolution to learn how to edit video and this was the result.

The Ace Attorney case Farewell, My Turnabout is likely named in tribute to Raymond Chandler's Farewell, My Lovely, one of the great American crime novels.
Our game's subtitle Farewell, My Beloved also evokes the novel, but its meaning to our story you'll have to wait and see! 👁️
I hope that Paranormasight's OST makes it onto more streaming services someday. The arrangements are so beautiful, with some really fine acoustic guitar playing, which isn't something I often hear in game music!

It'd be amazing if this rumor were true. Famicom Detective Club was a huge inspiration for us, and while I kind of doubt Nintendo is really cooking up anything, we wouldn't be making Detective Instinct if we didn't think this kind of game had an audience!

(Though, of course, the idea evolved considerably in that two weeks...)
We're thinking of putting a Discord server together, so our followers can interact with us and other fans of ADVs... 🤔

Our "making of" interview with the developers of Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo continues:
Learn about how they adapted real world locations in to the game, and how they managed to make such groundbreaking puzzles.
Our story has many cinematic inspirations; I've mentioned Hitchcock and "The Lady Vanishes", but another film on my mind was Otto Preminger's "Bunny Lake Is Missing", a very bizarre and psychologically twisted movie that uses the "missing person" conceit in a fascinating way...
Chandler's novels established a template for a certain kind of detective fiction, with densely convoluted plots and a focus on character and mood. This makes them a great source of inspiration for ADVs - Rika Suzuki talks a bit about his influence here:
We've been cooking up something super cool for the past few weeks that we'll be able to show more from very soon... but, until then, here's a little hint! 👀

We'd all like to wish everyone a wonderful holiday season! Be sure to spend lots of time with friends, family, and, of course, great adventure games :) 🎅
You shouldn't take anything for granted in game design, including some things thought to be obvious conveniences. It's just as true for ADVs, and is why DI is designed with some old school mechanics that are uncommon now but encourage a kind of playstyle that we find appealing.
“No body wants to go back to this” no body wanted to ‘go back’ to unfair bosses that took dozens of tries in order to understand until Dark souls. Now everyone emulates them

I want to believe there's a folder somewhere of Shu Takumi performing all of Maya's expressions for the Ace Attorney artists. There probably isn't, but what if there was...👀
Also, this is well-known, but Hotel Dusk/Last Window took this to the extreme by fully rotoscoping real life models, sometimes even using their facial features for the characters!
Not surprised to see Edgeworth at the top, but happy to see AJ Phoenix is up there! Such an interesting evolution of the character, one of the coolest things the series did post-OG trilogy (lovely illustration, too!)

It goes without saying that CiNG was a big influence on Detective Instinct, especially with our story's tone and some aspects of our game design. It's great that they're starting to get more recognition lately - still hard to believe that Another Code remake is real!
