Jihad Al-Shamie was on bail after rape arrest. His father Faraj Al-Shamie distanced himself from this attack, expressing deep shock and asked for privacy. A post on his father's Facebook page, which has been verified by the BBC, appears to praise the 7 October attack by Hamas.
