Hey! This placed tricked me into getting an STD test there after I thought it was a normal place to do such a thing. It wasn't! The "nurse" lectured to me about the dangers of premarital sex in a locked room for 2 hours and then made me pray with her! It was violating and weird!!
They did eventually give me the test. I ended up going to the Planned Parenthood across town though and they gave me an STD test for free. No lectures. No mumbling through an Our Father. 10/10 experience
Me: So what happens if I get too much sunlight?
The Sun: Skin cancer 😊
Me: What about too little?
The Sun: Depression 😉
Me: So what's the right amount I need?
The Sun: It's a secret 🫣🤭

It happened 10 years ago when I was but an anxious college lad. I'm an anxious grown up lad now but encourage anyone who has been victimized by this clinic to get their justice!!
✨some personal news✨Today, I've been officially promoted to senior editor of the innovation section at

Neuroengineer Viktor Tóth trained three rats to play "Doom II." Here's a video of one of the rats Romero getting surprised by an imp during shooting training! 🐀
The new "AI is going to kill us all!!1!" letter is a wall of shame—where people are voluntarily adding their own names.
We should be concerned by the real harms that corps and the people who make them up are doing in the name of "AI", not abt Skynet.
ALSO PITCH ME FOR THE LOVE OF GOD I DESPERATELY NEED AWESOME SCIENCE AND TECH STORIES NOW THAT THEY'VE FOOLISHLY GIVEN ME THE REIGNS TO THIS AMAZING SECTION. DMS OPEN. EMAIL INBOX OPEN. HELL, SEND ME A VENMO WITH A PITCH IN THE DESCRIPTION IDC

. If you're looking to contribute innovation stories to the Beast, hit him up—you're not going to find a better science/tech editor or friend to work with.
My DnD campaign takes place in an alt-history fantasy version of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. After 2+ years, they're finally facing the BBEG at the Ferris Wheel so of course I had to build one.
1. The scene must have two or more female characters. 2. They must talk to each other. 3. They must talk about French sauces.
Call it the Bechamel Test.
@GlynnTarrant
Hey Glynn, my name is Tony and I'm a tech reporter for The Daily Beast. I'd love to chat with you more about this experience for a story. Please let me know if we can connect.
You guys have NO idea how huge it is that Ke Huy Quan is a boat person refugee who won a major Oscar and used his speech to talk about his journey. I'm the son of boat people. Seeing him on that stage meant so god damn much to me and so many others. This is simply wonderful.
NEW: "Less lethal" rubber bullets were used against UCLA student protestors on Thursday.
This is—and this is a statement backed by interviews I did with experts—completely fucked.
I dug into the history and reasons why.
The jig is up: I'll be joining Slate as the senior tech editor!*
Really excited to join one of my favorite publications ever -- and help build out incredible coverage in tech, science, and culture.
*I'm joining at the end of the month, so it's still island time for me baby!!
COMING IN WITH THE HOT TAKES: Giving private companies (including a Raytheon subsidiary) big fat government contracts that are vague in timeline and deliverables is bad, actually.

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have managed to cause tiny plastic trays to hover using only light. Next up: Back To The Future-style hoverboards 💡
Life update: Friday will be my last day with The Daily Beast.
No, I'm not being fired/laid off. I've recently accepted a role at another place (more on that later!).
For now, I'll say that the past 2 years have been incredible and I'm gutted to leave a truly fantastic outfit.
The Department of Defense released a "briefing card" regarding UFOs and UAPs. This is a list of talking points to help government personnel answer questions about "extraterrestrial technology" and aliens.

Scientists have debuted a massive magnet nearly 300,000 times stronger than Earth's magnetic field. It'll be used to help build a nuclear fusion reactor.

Astronomers recently captured some of the most detailed, high-res images we have of deep space yet using the LOFAR radio telescope network. Below is one of the images (Hercules A, a supermassive blackhole, shooting out jets of gas)🔭
NEW: Cars are killing pedestrians and cyclists at a historic rate. Activists like
@ThePeoplesCDOT
and
@CrosswalksLA
install guerrilla street infrastructure like speed bumps and crosswalks to fight back.
I got a chance to watch them work for my latest.
After nearly defeating Steve King in a ruby-red district,
@JDScholten
's back with his homespun brand of progressive populism to fight two new challengers: an establishment republican and a pandemic.
My latest (and first) piece in the
@TheProspect
@bettinamak
jfc a whole lot to unpack here. "near asians," using the term "politically incorrect" unironically, and a white senior editor who has a dedicated column centered around her perspective because married an asian dude. hoo boy
I am a victim of my own success and have created an even more desperate problem for myself with my inundated inbox.
Thank you for all the great pitches (and feel free to keep pitching)! I may be slow to respond but will try to get through all of these in the next week.

No, a chatbot didn't fall in love with you. No, it's not spying on you either. But, one thing is certain: Everyone needs to calm tf down about Bing's new AI search engine.
My argument for sanity in this chatbot discourse:
Sen. Schumer's AI summit convened AI industry leaders to discuss ways Congress can regulate the tech.
But a whopping 13 of the 22 reported attendees are tech CEOs—a huge disparity that shows we have a LONG way to go when it comes to regulation.
✨Some news✨After a year with
@Futurism
, I have officially filed my last story and will be joining
@thedailybeast
as a Deputy Editor for the Science & Innovation section! I am immensely proud of the work I've done and excited to continue doing great work for the Beast.
Tragic and totally avoidable irony of having a food desert in a state that is 2nd in the nation in total food production, and 1st in the nation in corn yields.
These neighborhoods deserve better leadership in public health and equity.
Hy-Vees in low-income neighborhoods in Waterloo, Cedar Rapids, and Davenport will close June 23—and with no grocery store within 2 miles of each, that will be 3 new food deserts created.
A stunning and rare "triple transit" of Jupiter's moons occurred last week. This occurs when all three moons simultaneously passed in front of the planet. 🌜

New story by me for
@outsidemagazine
. I went hiking and camping while carrying only the things my D&D character carries -- and lived to tell the tale.
@AbbyLeeHood
Viktor is incredibly benevolent and allowed them very frequent breaks (which is part of the reason he only got so far with the rats). They also seemed to enjoy their time when they were on there because of the sugar water
Never in a million years would I have thought my hometown would have a Pride Parade. This is unexpected and shocking in the best ways. Very proud of Sioux City right now.
When will Big Tech companies learn that I don't want a generative AI in my search function and Excel.
I want Google Docs to have a dark mode so I don't feel like I'm staring at the sun whenever I write.
The UK Ministry of Defense just announced that Russia used approx. 65% of its entire ground forces (!!!) in Ukraine. An entire quarter of those troops have been "rendered combat ineffective." Just a completely astonishing fuck up by Putin.
"First Day of My Life" by Bright Eyes just started playing in the coffee shop I'm in and everybody began crying and kissing and getting married??? This is crazy. I've never experienced anything like this. I have a husband now.
