More from today’s conference call:
“Hey Brad, it’s
@PFTCommenter
from DraftJoshAllen dot net, can you tell us if you have any interest in signing LeBron James this summer?”
Brad: “I can’t answer that.”
A lengthy pause.
PFT: “Please?”
My favorite part of Celtics media day was Rob Williams being asked if he made the right decision to come back in the playoffs: "I played in the Finals, homie. You win some, you lose some. ... I don't regret that shit."
Kyrie Irving today: “I didn’t really come into this game to be cameras in my face, be famous, be a celebrity, whatever embodies that. It’s a little hard for me. I wanted those things when I was younger, but now ... I just want to play basketball at a very high level.”
Jimmy Butler was so confident he was gonna destroy his teammates, he called Rachel Nichols to come interview him post-practice. What an unbelievable flex.
ESPN Sources: The Oklahoma City Thunder are trading Derrick Favors, Ty Jerome, Moe Harkless, Theo Maledon and a 2025 second-round pick via Atlanta to the Houston Rockets for David Nwaba, Sterling Brown, Trey Burke and Marquese Chriss.
The Celtics just did a Jumbotron segment asking what the most exciting thing each player did this summer.
Carsen: Getting drafted.
Jaylen: Going to Egypt.
Smart: Team USA
Rob Williams: … Getting in a wave pool for the first time lmao
Kemba Walker on Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum: "These dudes are so talented, especially for their age. … For me to not have a great shooting night and still get a win? That hasn't happened much over the course of my career, so I'm excited about it."
Ty Lue said the Celtics “threw (the Cavs) for a loop” by declining to play Ojeleye. That’s why Korver didn’t play as many minutes. That was his matchup.
Carsen Edwards on Grant Williams: “He’s a good dude, man. Yesterday we were talking on FaceTime and I had just gotten into Boston. He was like, ‘Do you want to play games?’ And I’m like, ‘Dude, I just got here.’ He’s like, ‘I play board games too.’"
Marcus Smart on Boston: “You name me another city that’s got four teams in different categories like that that’s all known for winning championships. ... For me, being here and experiencing it for myself, Boston is definitely a place you want to be."
my Hot Take is that Kyrie has given Celtics fans plenty of reason to dislike him and Celtics fans have given him plenty of reasons to dislike them and maybe the best thing for both sides is to agree to deeply dislike each other because that happens a lot in sports
Kyrie Irving was asked if Kawhi reminds him of LeBron physically.
"Brad Stevens told me a quote: 'Comparison is the thief of joy.' So I’m going to enjoy Kawhi for who he is and what he brings to the game, and I’m going to enjoy what Bron brings to the game as well."
Marcus Smart was asked what the Celtics need to do tonight without Jaylen Brown in the lineup.
Smart: "I didn’t know Jaylen was out. Oh shit. Okay. Damn."
Jayson Tatum just met a child pregame - signed a jersey, took a couple photos and told him “Have fun, okay?” The kid’s mother wiped away tears as they walked away.
Jaylen Brown says he would like to see the George Floyd bill pass.
That bill:
- lowers criminal intent standard
- limits qualified immunity
- authorizes DOJ to issue subpoenas on police
- creates a national registry to compile data on complaints of police misconduct
Jaylen Brown said he’s getting old and he’s going to leave the dunking to Javonte Green and Robert Williams. Several people pointed out Javonte is three years older.
Jaylen chuckles. “That’s a good point.”
Jayson Tatum went to an all-boys Catholic high school. On the All The Smoke podcast, Tatum joked that Deuce might be five if he had gone to a public school.
Jaylen Brown on Isaiah Thomas guarding him: “He was screaming for help ... Maybe his braids was too tight.” (Goes on to express how much he likes IT, obviously)
Jayson Tatum was informed Marcus Smart said this is the best stretch of basketball in his Celtics career.
Tatum clicked his tongue. “We won like 16 games in a row my rookie year. THAT was crazy."
The Celtics are outscoring opponents by - I am not making this up - 31.9 points per 100 possessions with Sam Hauser on the floor, per Cleaning the Glass.
Woj says on his podcast there is a lot of “wishful thinking” that Kyrie is in play. Adds that Irving has been clear "in recent weeks, in recent days” that he remains committed to the Celtics.
I keep seeing people say the Celtics secured commitments from top free agents in three of their last four offseasons, but that’s not actually true: It’s four out of four.
2016: Horford
2017: Hayward
2018: Kyrie
2019: Kemba
So there’s that.
The NBA’s latest L2M report says, among other things, Joel Embiid was fouled by Aron Baynes on his last shot attempt and Marcus Smart traveled on his last steal.
As I was talking to Grant Williams today, Danny Ainge came out of his office and gave Williams an enthusiastic thumbs up from across the court.
Grant: “He just got his candle."
Jaylen Brown was asked at shoot around if he feels freer to play his style of basketball with Kyrie no longer on the team.
“No comment. Next question."
Marcus Smart: "Last year for us, a lot of people didn’t really know their roles, they didn’t really know where they fit. This year, we’re all on the same page."
Tristan Thompson says the Celtics are the “hunted,” not the hunters after making the ECF.
“We’ve got to come with a pit-bull, 48-minute bloodbath mentality."
