A Russian registered Antonov AN124 - Volga Dnepr #VI5854 RA-82078 - arrived in Toronto from Anchorage early this morning. Sources tell me it will not be departing anytime soon due to Canadian airspace restrictions prohibiting Russian aircraft. An exemption needs to be requested.

Please be kind to airline employees. They want you to get to your destination just like you do. Most don’t set the rules. They follow and enforce. Be kind.

I forgot how much utter crap airline employees have to endure from rude, self-important fliers. It is all coming back now.

@txwikinger_ea Too early to tell where things failed. Exemption could be inferred if ATC granted #AF111 permission to continue through Canadian airspace. Investigation will determine what happened.

WSJ’s aviation reporter Aly Sider reports that allowing Aeroflot SU111 to fly over Canada was a mistake made by NAV CANADA and it should not have been allowed.

A spokesperson for Canada's transport ministers says Aeroflot 111 shouldn't have been allowed to pass through its airspace. "This evening, NAV Canada mistakenly permitted a banned aircraft into Canadian airspace. This shouldn’t have happened."

Many factors are considered in flight bans & they can include (but not limited to) safety, possible threats, diplomatic or political. Since these bans went into effect today they’re likely being allowed to return home. You need to consider civilian factors as well.

Update Two Russian Aeroflot flights flew in Canadian airspace while heading home to Moscow. #SU111 route was over land while #SU157 route took them close to land but kept them over water. Exemptions can be made under the ban.

This story is steeped in rumours from the outset. Although it’s unfortunate fate looks probable, the Antonov Company has not made an official statement one way or another.
