I look forward to seeing how Apple engineers continue to find new ways to increase the ease of repairability of devices while maintaining their focus on durability. It's a balancing act, but one that we should expect from all hardware vendors.

The company is working to make durable designs more repairable. For example, the iPhone 16 utilized a new type of adhesive on the phone battery that you can deactivate by using the charge from a 9-volt battery.

Company executives also emphasized that this enhanced durability has led to hundreds of millions of iPhones still in use after five years, as well as millions more that are in the hands of their second or third owners.

Durability requires designs, adhesives, and seals that can make at-home repairs more difficult; however, the resulting devices should require fewer repairs over their lifetime. Apple said it has seen a 40% reduction in out-of-warranty repairs over the past decade.

One of my key takeaways is that while Apple is criticized by some who feel its hardware should be easier to repair by end users, the reason these devices can be challenging to fix is often that the company has prioritized making them as reliable and durable as possible.

Through its robust testing, the company collects the data required to engineer next-generation products that are more durable than the last.

Apple executives said they think a lot about device longevity, and to drive more long-lived products, the company focuses on three key pillars: Reliability, software updates, and repairability.

From random drops to high-vibration tables to an IPX Chamber that simulates rain and water spray, Apple puts all its hardware through some brutal paces.

I had the opportunity to visit one of Apple's Durability Labs this week to see the various methods the company uses to test its hardware.
