6/ Israel has a right to defend itself, a right to be heard, and a right like every country to exist as a nation, a Jewish State, amongst peers. It does its best, and its history is always evolving. I urge everyone to continue to learn about Israel's history. Education is key.

5/ For those on the fence about support of Israel, or those opposed to Israel, I hope you've read the Tweets in this feed with the understanding that the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict is lengthy and dynamic. Israel has not always acted perfectly, but they have tried.

4/ For those who are Zionists and staunch supporters of Israel, continue to fight the fight. There is lots to be proud of, and lots to learn. Our mission is noble, and the story of Israel is epic.

3/ Over the last year, through this feed, I've tried to highlight as much as I can about Israeli/Zionist history and culture, making moments in military and general history, music, art, early Zionism, etc. It has been an incredibly journey, and I've only scratched the surface.

2/ Given the oversized role that Israel and its history plays in the geopolitical dialogue today, it has always been my belief that the world is better served knowing more about the intricacies of Israeli history. @IsraeliPM @netanyahu @PresidentRuvi

1/ Today marks 1 year since I began this Twitter feed, and this marks my last formal tweet in the year of learning all about Israeli and Zionist history. I've certainly learned a lot through this endeavour, and hope everyone who has been following along has learned something too.

25/ Finally, I noted this the other day from @EquusontheBuses, who Tweeted that he recently obtained this stamp and envelope from January 1957 commemorating the brief Israeli occupation of the Gaza Strip. By March, Israel had withdrawn, only to return in June 1967.

24/ The Sinai Campaign is interpreted differently by each side, but the facts are clear that the unresolved issues from this conflict led to the outbreak of the Six Day War 11 years later, in 1967.

22/ 1 promise Israel (through Ben Gurion) received from Eisenhower was that the US would maintain the freedom for Israel to navigate in the Suez Canal through the Straits of Tiran. The US also sponsored a UN Resolution forming the UN Emergency Force (UNEF) to supervise the Sinai

21/ This pressure, too much for Israel to bear, resulted in an Israeli withdrawal from the areas it conquered, without obtaining any Egyptian concessions. This sowed the seeds for the 1967 War.

19/ Unfortunately, US Pres Eisenhower was upset that Israel, France and the UK had planned together in secret. Israel's failure to inform the US sparked tension between the countries. The US then joined forces with the USSR to pressure Israel to withdraw from the Sinai.

18/ In only 100 hours, the Israelis reached their operational goals. They held the Gaza Strip, and had advanced as far as Sharm el-Sheikh along the Red Sea - they had almost the entire Sinai Peninsula. 231 Israeli soldiers had died in the fighting.

17/ Though the French had encouraged the British to keep fighting and capture the Canal, it was no use, and they simply delayed somewhat the acceptance of the cease-fire. The allies had failed to accomplish their goals, but not the Israelis.

16/ The reason for the quick cease-fire was the USSR threat to use every weapon available to stop the violence, and the US decision to make a much needed loan of $1 billion from the @IMFNews contingent on a cease-fire.

15/ That same day, British and French paratroopers landed near Port Said, and amphibious ships dropped commandos on the shore. The British captured Port Said, and advanced to within 25 miles of Suez City before the UK agreed to a cease-fire.

14/ The Israelis continued to fight. They swept across the desert, capturing the entire Sinai by Nov 5. The US Ambassador noted "reports showed that many Egyptian troops just took off their shoes and ran barefoot to get out of there faster."

13/ On Oct 30, the US sponsored a Security Council resolution calling for an immediate Israeli withdrawal, but the French and British vetoed. The next day, the allies launched air operations, bombing Egyptian airfields near Suez.
