@nathanbenaich In ML we often take an application-specific problem and elevate it to a general technical problem. Solving the general problem can still be in service to the specific applied one, and helps connect other general technical solutions to the specific one. Abstraction is good!

I’d love to be inspired by the amazing achievement of SpaceX today, have always loved the frontier of space travel as a goal for “hard tech”. But the mood is very somber these days, we got serious and pressing problems to overcome as societies. Take care of yourselves out there

Sand Worms! Giant spaceships! Sorry, that’s Dune…. But now that I have your attention, what we have on offer is just the humble return of the approximate Bayesian inference symposium #AABI2022 @aabi_org . Please consider the deadline in November.

@DaniloJRezende I love Jeff and admire his desire and explorations to “learn AI”. The OpenAI work is also very impressive. But I agree with you here, Inductive biases are necessary once you assume (I do!) that computation and intelligence has to be bounded rational, i.e. operate under budgets.

@docmilanfar In the next months-year we will see literature review agents that I anticipate will be commodified and hopefully will add more diversity to those venues. The issue is they will have other types of biases, i.e. identify related ideas when the language is different… let’s see.

@EmtiyazKhan @hardmaru @slashML We should separate academic and industrial track ML reviews. The insistence on scaling is hampering creativity and misguiding reviewers. It’s just irrational to expect truly new ideas to work this well in their first iteration. People get credit for scaling also by lucrative jobs

@EigenGender I’m probably missing the point here entirely, but I like “the futurological congress” by Lem and “Anathem” by Stephenson does a good bit of world building.

@avt_im That post is not only deeply unscientific in culture and content, it is also appalling in form and style. What shocks me the most is the attack on an (actually brilliant, though that’s irrelevant) early career researcher, for no apparent reason. Very unwelcome, thanks for

And with that opportunity I am also happy to share our insitro-research code repo is up with its first public release being the code supporting this paper (also using @PyroAi in parts of it) and code for Del-dock

Beautiful new work “Del-Dock” on marrying DELs and docking stemming from the summer internship of @KShmilovich with us, led by him and Benson Chen, and our first of many works with @mmsltn and yours truly. What did we do? A brief 🧵1/6 Paper link:

Come see our work on Channel Vision Transformers at #ICLR2024 presented by @OverrideSrini , @yujia_bao and me didn’t make it to Vienna this time. It’s a fun twist on transformers for pixels that helps with multi-channel imaging and dataset integration, also has a useful idea on

So many great ideas in this paper. The key point of going beyond homologous genes is so powerful, using protein LLMs as a metric is a great way to do that.
