I didn't double my freelance income in 2022.
But guess what? I slashed the number of clients I worked with in half, accepting only what excited me.
Instead of focusing on $, I focused on my health.
I read more, played more, went to the gym, saw friends. I'll call that success
I don't know if this is a hot take or not, but I strongly feel like you need to be a half-decent writer if you want to work in any marketing position.
You should should invest time into growing your writing skills in college. If you didn't, that's okay—start now.
Marketers, one of the best things you can do for yourself is to keep a folder FULL of screenshots of marketing campaigns that stood out to you over the years.
In the future, whenever you need inspiration you'll have an entire swipe file to pull from.
Marketing 20+ years ago: Do anything to make the sale. Lie, be cunning, sell false hope.
Marketing now: Create a positive experience long-term. Give value. Build connections. Help consumers discover a better result or a better self.
We're not the bad guys anymore.
Hey
#MarketingTwitter
! I'm building a list of experts I can reach out to when I'm looking for quotes for my content. Is anyone interested in being included? I'll email a Google form when I'm working on something and always provide a link back to your website!
It takes two seconds to tell someone they did a good job on something.
That's two seconds to make someone feel motivated for the rest of the day.
Just something to keep in mind as we all start this week. 😊
That email you just sent? Share it as a tweet thread tomorrow. That blog you published? Turn it into an email course. That eBook you created? Turn it into 5 guest posts.
No more excuses. Repurposing and distribution is easier than you think.
I've had articles take 6-12 months before getting to page one in Google.
No one ever said SEO was fast. It's ok.
But that's why you can't rely on it alone to distribute your content. Other channels exist, and it's time we learn to use them better.
I'm dropping the biggest email marketing article I've ever written very soon—and it includes over 30 examples.
Wowza.
Can't wait to share with y'all. ☺️
Content marketing is NOT ranking for thousands of meaningless keywords.
Content marketing is an experience—in written, video, and audio form.
It's about combining engagement, education, community, and storytelling.
And it sure as hell takes skill to do all the above well. 👏
Despite what your highschool English teacher said, you CAN start your sentence with "and," "because," and "so."
I do it all the time to add emphasis. And because I can. 😉
Writing tip of the day!
What's the difference between E.g. and I.e.?
E.g. stands for "exempli gratia" in Latin, meaning "for example."
I.e. stands for "id est," meaning "in other words."
Here's a trick to remember when to use them:
E.g. = example given
I.g. = in essence
"My business tried content marketing; wasn't worth it."
🤔🤔🤔
1. Did you hire an expert to manage it?
2. Did you get talented creators and pay them well?
3. How long did you wait before you decided it wasn't worth it?
4. How did you distribute it?
5. What KPIs did you look at?
The more I connect with marketing leaders the more I realize that no one—absolutely no one—has their shit together.
Startup to enterprise, data is broken and people are just figuring it out.
Take a breath today.
Alright freelancers, I hear you—99.9% of you will not return to a full-time job.
So now I have to ask: how do you maintain a constant stream of work?
I think a reason people fear freelancing full time is because of the ebbs and flows.
I ended a relationship with a client after writing for them for 2 years.
It was difficult; I enjoyed writing for them. But as new and more profitable opportunities came up, something had to give.
This is your reminder that growth is good. Also to know when to let go.
I vented to a marketing friend about a project I'm stressed about. I can't forget his response:
"I think you undervalue yourself and the work you do."
While people say imposter syndrome means growth, I think it can also hold you back.
So here are some tips to manage it.👇
People like to talk about the perks of freelancing so much (rightly so): the flexibility, the $, choosing your clients.
But there are definitely bad experiences, too (nasty clients, tough projects, being fired). Can we be more honest about those so people know they're not alone?
I've had articles I wrote 6+ months ago finally get to pages 1-2 of Google recently.
No one ever said SEO was fast. It's ok.
But that's why you can't rely on it alone to distribute your content. Other channels exist, and it's time content marketers learn to use them.
Good writing isn't about stating the facts. It's about dissecting the information, reading between the lines, and discovering what story is going to impact your readers. A writer's job is to be a thought leader and critical thinker—just as much as the storyteller.
CEO of putting my tasks in Asana and then also listing them on a sheet of paper beside me.
Two task lists? Double the gratification of completing them. 😂
Please, please, please edit your freelancer's/writer's work using "suggestions" mode so they can see what you updated.
It's a learning opportunity that I promise they'll appreciate. 😊
Quick announcement:
For 2021, I've decided to focus my freelance business & will be specializing only in long-form SEO content for future projects.
I love copywriting, but my passion is in researching & telling stories through blogs, case studies, guides. This feels right 😁
A few companies asked me this week how they can get freelancers to come work in-house FT.
To this, I said "They could if companies start paying the same as what they can make on their own, offer great vacation, benefits, and flexibility."
Idk. What do freelancers think?
People reach out to me all the time for services I don't offer (copywriting, strategy, etc).
I want to build my network so I can refer these people to someone who CAN help.
If you're a freelancer, comment your expertise, industry, and niche.
E.g, graphic designer, B2B, ecom ☺️
I have exciting news... I'm hiring a content specialist at Alloy! 🎉😁

How to add personality to your writing:
- Break grammar rules. Yes—go ahead and start that sentence with "And."
- Break the fourth wall, using brackets or italics to add your own thoughts.
- Record yourself talking about the topic you're writing about. Pull examples.
What else?
Last week, there were so many guesses about my next company. Every guess was 🔥, and I'm finally excited to announce the right one...
Today is my first day as Content Marketing Lead at
@AlloyAutomation
!!🖤🎉
Wrote an article on Thursday. Finished it Friday.
Came back end of day on Friday to edit it.
Opened it Monday morning and made MANY edits.
☝️just an example of why it's important to come back to things a few days later.
Don't just write your last sentence and submit.

Me: "I'm going to start accepting less freelance work so I can enjoy more of my evenings and weekends."
Potential client: "Hi, I'd love to talk to you about a freelance writing proj-"
Me: "Yes."
Wow, one of my clients just paid me 4 DAYS EARLY. Only freelancers will understand how amazing this is.
Actually, they're looking for more ecom writers. HMU to learn more!
... I realize how salesy this tweet sounds. I promise the intent was to brag about the early payment.😂
Giving a lecture on SEO to communications master's students tomorrow morning.
What advice would you give them?
I think it'd be fun to screenshot some of your tweets into my slides. 😊
The most common thing I fix while editing: turning hyphens into proper Em Dashes.
The Em dash is named after the fact that it's about the same width as the capital letter M.
Not sure of the difference between — and - ?
I'll explain the three main use-cases. 👇
I used AI to help me write an article. In 1 month, it ranked for 47 keywords (many on pages 1 and 2), and got tons of organic social shares.
No one suspected a thing. That's because AI didn't do the work—I did. I interviewed. I researched.
It's an assistant, you're the expert.
@realBrookNash
"Appreciate your take on this! I'm not sure this aligns with [our brand ethos/goals/approach as per our previous conversation/etc]. Can you explain your thinking?"
Friendly reminder that not everything in marketing has to be a sales pitch.
Your content, your interactions, your relationships—just learn how to provide value.
Trust me, the payoff will be much better.
I reached 5,000 followers today.
To some, this is a small number. But to me, it shows how amazing this app is for finding a community you belong in.
That's 5,000 incredible writers, marketers, and DTC folks. Thank you everyone for teaching me something valuable & supporting me.
Why yes, I do keep a folder in my Google Drive full of screenshots... of people complimenting my work.
You really just need your own wall of love some weeks, okay??💀
Hire someone with freelance experience to lead your content. I promise they've learned how to handle feedback and criticism VERY well. Not to mention their flexibility skills. 😂
Hey, before you launch that thing... did you double-check that it's serving your audience and not a poorly blanketed marketing ploy that only serves you (the business)?
If you aren't giving value to others, go back to the drawing board!
Freelance tip: Share your rates and process BEFORE you hop on a call with an interested client.
In the past, I've spent time researching a company to prepare for the call (and spoke with them for 30 minutes) just to find out their budget wasn't aligned.
Protect your time.
Don't underestimate the power of connections.
- When I was laid off in 2020, I had a new job within 2 weeks because of a close connection
- My freelance biz went from 1-2 clients to 6 clients consistently because of connections
But how do you make good ones? Let's chat. 👇
Writing tip: You can probably delete the words "is a great way to..." from your sentences.
E.g.,
❌"Virtual events are a great way to bridge social followers over to your email list."
✅"Virtual events can bridge social followers over to your email list."
Hey
#MarketingTwitter
! I'm looking to connect with some young marketers at ecommerce/DTC brands (or agencies working with these brands). It's for a secret project 👀🤫
Anyone out there who could help?
I'm a big fan of AI—I've made that clear.
But I have NEVER prompted any AI tool in a way where it has given me back anything that I would consider "publish worthy."
And no, it's not how I'm prompting. I know all the tricks.
It's that I'm not comfortable publishing anything
Getting inspired is almost impossible when you're burnt out.
My best ideas come when I'm able to step away and breathe. Sometimes it's on a walk, sometimes it's in the bath with a glass of wine (seriously).
The point is, you need to give your mind breaks to feel creative.
Alright, I need some brilliant
#MarketingTwitter
minds to help me answer a question:
What are some of your favorite ways to re-use a podcast episode to create content?
I've already got blog posts on my list. 😁
A common hesitation about content marketing: the fear of educating competitors.
Well, keep in mind
1. Being the first the say something gives you credibility.
2. Saying something in the best and smartest way brings business.
2. Educating customers builds loyalty and retention.
So many folks have been guessing where my next move is. 🕵️
These are the guesses so far:
- Shopify
- Govalo
- Triple Whale
- Tydo
- Alloy
- Klaviyo
- Repeat
I'll give you a hint... it's one of them. 👀
Be careful how you're phrasing the word "but."
It sounds harsher than you think, and it adds a negative connotation to the sentence.
❌"We love this piece, but we'd like more quotes."
✅"We love this piece, and we think it'd be stronger with more quotes."
Framing, people!
I want to share something
@eliweisss
and I spoke about yesterday. I haven't stopped thinking it:
ROI doesn't always need to be directly tied to $.
Sometimes it's the time you save, sometimes it's the brand experience you create, etc.
Those have an impact in the long run.
At what point in your career does imposter syndrome go away? Or, is it always there in some capacity? Curious to hear from others that have been in the field for a while
My friend who's been working in her field for 20+ years shared with me how she used to care so much about "making it to the top."
She did make it. The reality? Burnout, exhaustion and unhappiness.
Friendly reminder that you have a life outside of your job that needs nurturing.
Hey everyone! I'm looking to help an amazing company hire someone to lead content & marketing!
If you want to
1. Work with the best CEO ever who believes in playing the long-term marketing game
2. Have a flexible work schedule
3. Never have to do more than 40 hrs/week
HMU. ☺️
I lost a client I had been with for a year when I raised my rates.
Every project was quoted case-by-case. For the last one, I pushed my rates higher. They said no. I never heard from them again.
And you know what? That's fine. Because it opened doors to more profitable opps.
If you're consistent in your marketing, you're already doing better than 90% of businesses.
I promise you half the work is just being able to *consistently* give value and *consistently* distribute it.
Jumping around and switching strategies every month will be your downfall.
In a few weeks, I am guest lecturing at Western University and will teach an intro to SEO! 🤓
I'm so excited, but I want to know...
#MarketingTwitter
, what do you wish you had known/learned about SEO when you first started out?
I want this to be valuable to the students.
Dear aspiring writers, here's my advice for starting a freelance biz:
1. Accept that growth takes time. It took me 3 years to see steady leads.
2. Post your expertise and work on Twitter/LinkedIn.
3. Find a community to engage with on these channels. Build relationships.
Why do article intros have to be 150 words max? Why can't we add "fluff" to an article, like humor, sentence pauses, or dramatic statements?
In our fight to be so templatized, we’re losing our ability to be unique and engaging.
If it adds to the story, I say, "Why not?"
I believe every marketer should experience freelancing/consulting at least once in their career. Even if it's a one-off project here and there.
Every client brings new challenges, ideas, and experiences. You're never going to feel fully comfortable—it's continuous growth.
From Jan-March, I was working with six clients with my freelance biz (on top of working full time). Yes, six.
I was burnt out.
Now, I'm officially down to just two clients—and that's okay. Why? I'm still making the same amount of $ as I was with six.
Lesson: know your worth.
There's more to a freelancer's rates than their work experience.
When you're working for yourself, everything comes out of your own pocket: your tools, your health insurance, any outsourcing (for editing, research).
Remember that next time you think someone's rates are high.
No one said content distribution has to happen all at once.
Savour the content you create and spread it out. Create social media posts one day. Send an email another day. Share it in slack communities in a week.
In six months, share it again.
"It's a marathon, not a sprint."
Copywriting: A lot of me blankly staring at my screen trying to come up with a single sentence.
Blog writing: Me at 96 WPM with thoughts constantly streaming while I craft paragraphs and paragraphs of text.
Blogging is a really different vibe for me. 😂
Schools don't properly teach the research that goes into buyer personas. I think this is what leads to many marketers thinking you "make up" your buyer persona based on the customer you want your business to have.
This leads to a lot of guessing and no product-market fit.
You can't rush writing.
One article easily takes me 10+ hours with research, interviewing, outlining, drafting, sourcing photos, editing, etc.
Not to mention waiting for interview availability (which can take weeks).
Trust the process.
Yesterday I felt uncomfortable. I'm at a new job. Here's how I embraced it...
- Immediately shut down imposter syndrome thoughts.
- Went at my own pace. Not what I believe someone else wants my pace to be.
- Read & questioned EVERYTHING.
Let's embrace uncomfy more often. 🙌
Content marketers, you should learn basic HTML and CSS.
I honestly didn't think it would be necessary in my career, but having to edit content at the code level has come up more often than I expected.
I'm very thankful that I spent 6 weeks learning the basics in school.
Twitter has taught me that making meaningful connections starts with celebrating others and supporting them.
#MarketingTwitter
, you have been incredible to me. Now, I want to return the favor.
Who would like support? Can I review something? Give advice? Talk 1:1? Let me know.😊
Underrated acting skill that works in marketing: improvisation.
One of the 1st rules in improv is don't say no—you go with the flow of the scene without disrupting.
Think about podcasts, webinars, interviews, etc. You can never fully prepare for these. You improvise a lot.
One of my goals for 2022 is to interview more lesser known voices in DTC for my articles.
We often see the same people featured (and they have every right to be recognized for their work), but there are also smart people itching for a chance to share what they know.
