I am annoyed, angry, and scared. This never should have happened. Penn State knew that this event would become violent, because that’s what happens when the Proud Boys go anywhere. They chose to let it happen anyway.

The full statement also implied that the protesters against McInnes started the violence, when all sources thus far agree that the Proud Boys began spraying mace and pepper spray without physical provocation.

Penn State’s statement says “We have encouraged peaceful protest” when the entire student body received multiple emails asking us not to protest at all. This statement is a flat-out lie.

The event was eventually canceled, but only after McInnes showed up and can justifiably ask for the money he was promised. Penn State did not follow previous precedent of canceling events featuring people know to incite violence.

My favorite class right now is a semester-long class project adapting @ryanqnorth’s To Be or Not To Be into a play where the audience chooses what happens next. This is going to be so cool, y’all.

Also, if the vibes are off, they’re off. Trust your gut and don’t force anything.

My advice to my fellow college students is this: *notice* every opportunity, and then sometimes say no.

Join a club or 3, if you want, and be selective about it. Let yourself spend the remaining time studying, hanging with your friends, or taking that nap you really need. Don’t strangle your schedule. Let it breathe.
