Exceptional to see Oxford recording almost 100mm of rain today. It fell on the calendar day of 23 Sep and although no long running calendar day stats seem to exist to double check, it seems likely this is is the wettest calendar day in Oxford since records began 197 years ago.

More evidence the jet streams are shifting poleward, with a nice paper by Keel et al and an article by @jamesNESW. https://t.co/2za4Pqpsox

We find a significant poleward trend in the winter North Pacific Jet position that is robust to reanalysis and metric uncertainty The choice of jet metric creates more uncertainty than the choice...

Parts of Earth's jet stream have shifted toward the poles over the past several decades, likely in response to climate change. This was long forecast to happen, but has only now "emerged from the noise" says Thomas Keel @UCLgeography. New in @NewScientist: https://t.co/nQeEQvXC0V

Shallow circulation, lots of moisture, strong IVT convergence right downstream of the center, propagation along baroclinic zone. At this stage, Storm Ciarán's dynamics resembles the one of a diabatic Rossby vortex, making it similar to the infamous storm Lothar (1999). (1/7)
