Just come in from revisiting this one at Llanbadarn Fawr. Snap! Even appears to have the same Devonshire Marble. (& your photo is much better...)
The chancel floor at St John's, Clarendon Park is a rather lovely glass mosaic of foliage designs. The church was designed by Goddard and sons and built in 1884-5, the floor is by Rust & Co of London and an excellent example of their work. #MosaicMonday

...but I was wrong. This, the model, is Dundry stone; Mawdlam, the other (see today's post), is the mimic - made with Sutton stone. Sutton is the local, cheaper, alternative. Why pay more...?
I have this one recorded as Dundry stone, as I think is also the similarly scaley font at Mawdlam, a few miles along the coast to the northwest... @FontsOnFriday

Bottom left show what we were talking about recently. The whole left hand side of bowl is a large insert / repair (in limestone) filling a big hole in the original sandstone font.
Brecon Cathedral, dedicated to St John the Evangelist. Medieval pilgrims would have come to what was once a Normal priory (daughter house of Battle Abbey) to venerate the Golden Rood on the church's Rood screen. The 11th-century font is apparently the oldest in Wales. 1/2

Spending a few days in the Brecon Beacons (Wales). The trip so far has a watery theme: rain (and more rain!), waterfalls, and holy wells (+ some dry churches!). More later ...

Another Dundry stone font (with later ornament) if I remember rightly @fontsonfriday
We are always looking for new volunteers. So, if you live near one of our churches and would like to get involved, then please us contact by either email (volunteers@fofc.org.uk) or telephone (+44204 520 4458). In particular, Hodgeston, Pembs really needs more volunteers.

No, the quarter of the bowl that is standing immediately next to the wrought iron candlestick with the cross on it... It is limestone, not visible from this angle. The rest of the bowl as seen here is sandstone.

Very interesting; usually it's a staple inserted into a groove (or a pair of holes) cut into the thickness of the walls of the bowl. This bowl has been heavily restored (cement?) right across the nearside rim. How does the trefoiled bar actually attach to the stone?
Found (I think) a portion of an original hasp for a #FontCover lock at Ford, St Andrew, Sussex. The rough, square bowl on later base has a modern lid, but a medieval(?) hasp w a trefoil end. It was tossed out in 1865 & retrieved from farmyard in 1899. https://t.co/usnIhoY0EV

UK 30 year yield in blue, US in red. First time this century the UK has had to pay more to borrow than the US, and the rise looks inexorable. This is far more important than 100% of what passes for political commentary in the UK. This is reality.

Just turned my phone on and I get this. Setting me up nicely for the day! #fossilfriday
#FossilFriday Recently stumbled across pieces of fossiliferous Lusaba Limestone from the Early Permian age of Oman. The bedding planes are strewn with bryozoans, bivalves, crinoids and trilobites, all coated with ‘desert varnish’.

This map is now published - and several more examples have been noted in the Newport Levels region. Book available from the Strata Florida Trust books site.
#FontsonFriday Dundry stone fonts and other uses in Wales. 12-15 C. Thanks to Prof D. Austin for map and Welsh Stone Forum members for data. Many further examples doubtless remain to be discovered.

Wonderful — and represented a sharper, cleverer, more subversive America which now seems to have vanished.
Tom Lehrer has left us, aged 97. An incredible talent who, in 2023, put all his songs and recordings into the public domain, making them free for anyone to use for anything, forever. What a remarkable bloke.

‘Buddo’ - a rare representation of a human figure from the Neolithic, dating to around 2900-2400 BC. Discovered at Skara Brae in the mid-C19th, it was re-discovered amongst the archaeological collections at Stromness Museum in 2016. 📸 My own. #FindsFriday #Prehistory #Orkney
