Fifth Holy Well: the much overgrown and algae-ridden Priory Well on Holywell Road, Abergavenny. Although restored by the Abergavenny Civic Society, it's clearly seen better days!
Spending a few days in the Brecon Beacons (Wales). The trip so far has a watery theme: rain (and more rain!), waterfalls, and holy wells (+ some dry churches!). More later .

St David's Church, Llanthony Priory. Said to have been built on site of a 6th-century monastic cell. During the Middle Ages the building was the Priory's infirmary and it was only established as a stand-alone church in the 16th century.

Excited to visit Llanthony Priory, a house of Augustinian canons established early 12th century.🏴 .Recall Gerald of Wales' description: "the mountains rising above almost touching heaven" and the site "abounding with deer feeding aloft, at the extremity of the lofty horizon." 😍

More water! - Llangorse Lake and the Welsh Crannog Centre. 🏴.The Crannog (c.916 AD), pictured in the 2nd image, is unique to Wales. Crannogs (manmade islands) are usually associated with Scotland & Ireland. Llangorse Lake is the largest natural lake in south Wales.

The church of St Cynog, Defynnog. As well as the location of the Defynnog Yew, the church boasts a Roman tombstone with Celtic inscriptions in the porch, and a pre-Norman stoop . 1/2

And, beside St David's Church, Llanddew, our 3rd holy well of the trip: Bishop Gower's Well. The well was built into the defensive walls of the medieval Bishop's Palace (see previous post), with a 'private' and 'public' side, the latter to enable public access. Pump 1908.

St David's Church, Llanddew, reputedly the 1st Christian site in Brecknockshire (present building 12th century). Also pictured: the remains of the medieval Bishop's Palace where Gerald of Wales, as Archdeacon of Brecon, lived between 1175-1203. 🏴
