'Sainte Nicholaes, Godes druð, tymbre us faire scone hus...' Today is the feast of St Nicholas. This beautiful hymn to St Nicholas is one of the oldest songs surviving in English, composed by Godric of Finchale in the 12th century https://t.co/bdt7VSQ7NG

It's the 7th day of Advent! For today's #AdventPilgrimage I'm recalling the days I spent with the Arundel & Brighton Diocese pilgrims who were marking the 50th anniversary of their annual pilgrimage, walking from Horley to Eastbourne during what were the hottest days of the year!
Tomorrow, 30 November, sees the beginning of Advent!🕯️ To mark the countdown to Christmas, each day over Advent I'll post a reminder of one of this year’s pilgrimages, looking back at some of the special places I visited in 2025. #AdventPilgrimage

It's time for my sixth #AdventPilgrimage, this one to the ruins of Llanthony Priory in Wales, still - as described by Gerald of Wales in the 12th century - situated "in a wilderness far removed from the bustle of mankind."

My 5th #AdventPilgrimage destination is a secular one: the Angel of the North in Gateshead, a 20-metre tall sculpture by Antony Gormley (1998). It is the site of many informal shrines created by pilgrims wishing their loved ones to be remembered beneath the angel's wings.

A backwards 1525 Bible map helped shape modern borders, influencing how we imagine territory, nations, and political space today.

My fourth #AdventPilgrimage revisits the rather wonderful Anchor Church near Ingleby (Derbyshire), a series of caves thought to have been the hermitage (or anchorhold, hence the name) of St Hardulph in the 8th or 9th century.
