This is wild, I heard horror stories of US based mega carriers doing shady lease purchase or owner op setups but this kinda stuff is extra devious. Sweatshops on 18 wheels.

There’s a repeat pattern emerging with some Canadian trucking companies. They’re telling drivers who should be employed that they should get their own legal entity and operate as a contractor. The drivers don’t own the trucks. They’re employees but don’t get paid or treated.

Today’s term is working tractor percentage. Can hover around the mid 80’s as trucks are in shop or unseated on a fence. Holidays can take that down to 40%. After the holidays it can the creep back up to 50% or if you’re lucky 75%. Often fleets aren’t lucky after Labor Day.

Had a convo with a large trucking OEM about market outlook. Big word is Uncertainty with three big themes. Uncertainty over tariffs, both aluminum and steel are subject to tariffs, add in the USMCA and negotiations and it makes it hard to calculate the cost of a new truck.
