New paper that presents a "Sustainability Compass" made up of a comprehensive set of metrics for #foodsystem assessments. The Compass defines sustainability scores for four societal goals, underpinned by areas of concern. https://t.co/HrtNK8j6sy

What direction of travel in transforming #foodsystems? The compass helps to set direction of travel, and give account of lesser priorities, possible blind spots. Up next: to put the compass into practical use. #food2030 @food_trails @SciFoodHealth

"American capitalism coming for the weakest" will come with a rebound on the richest. Read this elegant argument by prof Servaas Storm @INETeconomics. https://t.co/r68banNf9U. Note the perspective on food sector as a last resort employer of low-paid jobs. @IMMANA_res

Without new economic thinking, macro policy will retain its deflationary biases and secular stagnation remains the ‘normal’.

In Q&A with Suneetha Kadiyala of @IMMANA_res, Angus Deaton returns to changing gaps in U.S. life expectancy and the recent reversal of past gains among those with least education. In his words, this is "American capitalism coming for the weakest".

It's a yes. Food access by Household Dietary Diversity Score is a strong predictor of average nutrient adequacy in household. Beware: it's on 7-day recall. Targeting income, access to health and transport seem key to improve HDDS. open access! @EPHIEthiopia @A4NH_CGIAR

Somehow, the bigger the #foodwaste challenge, the more potential this provides as solution to overcome other problems - such as cropland expansion driven by climate change. @WUReconomic

Glad to see this explored in a policy paper because 1. Meat levy for acceptable production not reduced consumption. 2. Feasible form of #truepricing in ag, if farmers benefit from levy. 3. Break away from "level playing field" paralysis. 4.Takes citizen-consumer dilemma seriously

Improved animal welfare (housing, management practices) is essential to social acceptability of livestock farming. German report (de) recommends higher standards with financial compensation to farmers to avoid loss of competitiveness financed by meat levy

Goede vraag! We schatten de verspilling in alle voedselconsumptie: wat consumenten thuis eten maar ook buitenshuis, in restaurants, kantines, catering. We sporen al die partijen aan om verspilling terug te dringen en kijken er (juist) niet alleen de consument op aan.

Thanks @newscientist for informative coverage of our @PLOSONE study on #foodwaste with ciritical views from from @FAO and @WRAP_UK. Agreed, measuring extent of waste is important. We indicate this should start around expediture levels as low as 7$ per day

If corporate food waste is meant to refer to losses in food industries and supply chains up to point of retail, it is not the focus of this model. The model does estimate ALL food waste at consumption level whether at consumer homes or in food service sector @PLOSONE @WUReconomic

#FoodWaste | Consumers may be wasting more than twice as much food as commonly believed. Widely used estimates don’t account for effects of affluence on consumer behavior, and affluent consumers waste more food. 🥕🌮🍇
