A thoughtful reflection by @jennfrey at the NYT.
I wrote about the lack of administrative support for the liberal arts in @nytimes. The standard story we hear is that students don't want it. But a darker reality is that even when it wins big with students and donors it loses with those in power.

The moment men cease to pull against [the Catholic Church] they feel a tug towards it. The moment they cease to shout it down they begin to listen to it with pleasure. The moment they try to be fair to it they begin to be fond of it. —G.K. Chesterton .

I agree. To the unfamiliar, this presentation seems credible. To the familiar, this presentation warps Buckley into a racist, partisan hack. To say that Buckley gave rise to Trump is akin saying Kennedy gave rise to AOC. No recognition of cultural complexity or political nuance.
It is staggering to see not one mention of Buckley's faith, musical aspirations or gift of friendship with people of all stripes. It's a lost opportunity for a program like @CBSSunday to highlight WFB the cultured man. @costareports, consider reading my book about my friendship.

Thank you for sharing, @TheAnchoress!.
You can almost hear polite society whisper to him, “There are customs, John. There are ways of doing things. Surely, your life can be a bit easier if you simply go along a bit. @ThinkerCatholic.
