I am more excited than ever for this new opportunity for my family and I, which is bittersweet of course. Last, I have made great friends and started long lasting collaborations through this platform. As this is likely my last Tweet, I thank you all and wish everyone the best!

Some might say yes, but I believe you have to trust your gut and bet on yourself sometimes to truly be happy. I have learned many lessons as a professor and PI and I am eternally grateful for the effort of students and scientists from my lab.

In less than 2 weeks I will shut the doors to my lab for the last time and start an entirely new career. I am very thankful for my time at Virginia Tech and @vtbiochem where I received great support and had amazing colleagues. Is it scary leaving a tenured position? 🧵

Always having fun in the lab. Here are our songs of the day so far this week. The lab that rocks together, publishes together. #confucius

Since I spend a significant amount of time at the keyboard, I needed a change. Upgraded my key caps to something a bit brighter and I love it 🤙🏼🏝️. The before and after

I forgot to introduce the World to the new family and lab dog, Lord Haesten Cnut Slade, King of the Brittany’s and chief presider of the couch. And yes, he’s soft and awesome 😎 From 7-17 weeks

It’s been a decade since I received this note from my favorite bench mate. Still rings true today. Scientists helping other scientists to pull themselves together.

Finally, I guess now is a good time to stop telling people that Fusobacterium only have Type V secretion. But it's still up for debate if they have other protein secretion systems we have trouble identifying.

All of this stems back to the great Fusobacterium secretion system analysis paper by @HendersonLab and colleagues that show potential Type IV or Type II secretion system genes. So we followed it and found an entire Type IV competence system.

We know there is a lot more to discover here: Can it be used efficiently for genetics? Why can't we get it to uptake linear DNA for chromosomal incorporation?

A big thanks to @VictorDiRita who kick started this several years ago by giving a great talk and then telling me to go test for natural competency when I told him a 'Type II secretion protein' in our genome looked eerily similar to a natural competence gene in C. jejuni. 🍻

Happy to share our latest work: Fusobacterium are naturally competent through Type IV pili. Great, concise study led by @blake_e_sanders and others not on twitter. We discovered it, now you go figure out what to do with it. https://t.co/f6Qrw0mUDR

Just found out that my anaerobic bag replacement is on hold because two other orders from my University aren't paid, they won't give me any info on who made the order so I have no power here. And I can't tape my bag enough because it's likely pre century. How's your day?
