Federal agents move on and cities are left to pick up the pieces - that’s why mayors like me are speaking out. via @TIME:

ICE is now the most prevalent issue for many mayors, whose residents fear Trump targeting their city after Minneapolis

America’s cities are stronger together. Energized to join hundreds of @usmayors in DC to push for more homes, lower costs, and safer communities - and to stand united against violent immigration enforcement in Minneapolis. #MayorsDC26

Mayors know how to keep communities safe. That’s why @davidfholt and I joined @kwelkernbc to discuss @usmayors’ bipartisan call to deescalate federal immigration actions in Minnesota.

No. Reckless and lawless actions by federal agents are making our communities less safe and fueling division and chaos. San Diego will not cooperate with that.
🚨 President Donald J. Trump calls on Governor Walz, Mayor Frey, and every Democratic governor and mayor in the United States to cooperate with the Trump admin to enforce our nation’s laws, rather than resist and stoke the flames of division, chaos, and violence:

The federal government claims its enforcement actions make us safer. It doesn’t. It’s a reckless, lawless campaign terrorizing our cities and it has now cost another life. San Diego condemns it, and we will never accept this as normal.

This is what happened. To be clear, I’ve been in direct contact with Blue and Tasha. I met with them all literally last week. The Mayor has signed an executive order directing SDPD to not participate in ICE operations. We are not the enemy.

In a roughly 40 minute speech, San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria says the city is still working to confront long-standing issues that he says have gone ignored for too long. NBC 7’s Joey Safchik was at city hall and has the highlights from his speech.

The 37th mayor of the city began his speech by addressing the state of the city when he first took office five years ago. https://t.co/IhXGyImnjt

Gloria’s annual speech, delivered at City Hall on Thursday afternoon, touched on familiar themes but offered less ambitious proposals than he had made in addresses earlier in his mayoralty.

My “Neighborhood Homes for All of Us” initiative is about building more homes and creating real homeownership options for San Diegans. Here’s what residents, business leaders, builders, and elected officials are saying:

I want to thank the City Council for supporting this common-sense measure to keep San Diegans safe. This technology helps our police officers recover stolen vehicles, apprehend dangerous criminals, and clear the innocent. I’m grateful they’ll continue to have the tools they need.

The failures of our behavioral health system have turned jails, shelters, and our streets into de facto mental institutions. States and counties must do more to ensure people with serious mental illness and their families get the care and support they need. https://t.co/Lih2pgRTMa

Despite passage of new laws expanding who can be forced to get help, the most needy still fall through the cracks.

San Diego is a pro-housing city but we can’t solve California’s housing crisis alone. I’m grateful that new and existing state laws are finally pushing every city to do its part. When we build more homes, we can lower housing costs for everyone.

For years, the state has been nudging its cities to build housing to address a severe shortage. Maybe what they needed was a shove.
