He needs to check out the section on 'tribal surnames' in every area in Scotland, based on the earliest Census results, contained in the appendices of 'The Scottish Traveller Report, 1895', published by Robert Dawson, Blackwell Press, Derbyshire, 2005. Honestly!

I was forced to point out that almost all couples I knew of had been married, albeit some weren't admitted to a church, due to the unwelcoming reception in some quarters...
