This headline is not correct - we've made clear this issue is caused by a particular combination of specific wind speed and direction, humidity, precipitation and fluctuating temperatures.
The bridge will not close every time it snows.
@ch55rup
It's caused by a specific combination of fluctuating temperature, precipitation, wind speed & direction. We don't get this problem every time it snows - e.g. there were no such issues during the “Beast from the East” two years ago.
So grandad was at a sportsman’s dinner and bought a 10ft X 4ft picture of the forth rail bridge. Seemingly he forgot he could just open da blinds 🤣🤣 granny not happy with him 🤦♂️😂😂
Forth Road Bridge is now CLOSED to all vehicles with winds exceeding 65mph.
Queensferry Crossing remains open to all traffic for now thanks to its wind shielding.

Queensferry Crossing proving its worth - new wind speed threshold data suggests the structure has saved the economy and hauliers millions of pounds in fuel costs, diversions and missed appointments since opening:
The Queensferry Crossing will reopen at 10:45 today, with bridge operators and weather forecasters now confident that the risk of ice and snow accumulating and falling from the cables has passed.

Here's a rare photo including both a steam train on the bridge and a ferry passing alongside, taken by Dr Norman Rogers in the 1950s.
Here's a photo from December 2010 - the first time the Forth Road Bridge ever had to close completely due to snow.
With most roads impassable, bridge workers walked up to ten miles through deep snow to reach the bridge and help get it open again.
Here's a memory from December 2010, when the snow on the Forth Road Bridge was so deep we had to dump it over the side with a spotter looking out for boats underneath!

The Wolf and the Queen!
The Wolf Moon above the Queensferry Crossing. Although it was a clear night, clouds came rolling in just as the moon went red, just my luck!
This photo shows the four ferries that carried traffic and pedestrians over the water before the Forth Road Bridge opened in 1964 - 'Sir William Wallace', 'Mary Queen of Scots', 'Robert the Bruce' and 'Queen Margaret'.

Our engineers are continually monitoring the Queensferry Crossing to check for ice forming and falling.
They're using sophisticated thermal imaging cameras to check the surface temperature of bridge components, which is a factor in whether snow and ice is able to accumulate.
The Forth Road Bridge is currently CLOSED to all traffic due to high winds gusting over 65mph.
The Queensferry Crossing remains open to all motorway traffic except double deck buses, thanks to its wind shielding.
⚠️ Due to high winds gusting over 50mph, the Forth Road Bridge is currently closed to double deck buses, motorcycles, cyclists and pedestrians.
✅ The Queensferry Crossing remains open to all motorway traffic.
On this day in 1964 the Forth Road Bridge was opened by Her Majesty the Queen - and on this day in 2017 she officially opened the Queensferry Crossing.
Happy birthday to both bridges!
A snow plough on the Forth Road Bridge giving you an idea of the amount of snow being cleared while closed. We will carry on until disruptive weather has passed. Queensferry Crossing currently running without issues. Please don't travel unless absolutely necessary, &

Here's a photo showing the queue to get onto the old ferries before the Forth Road Bridge opened to traffic.
We know this was taken shortly before the bridge opened in 1964, as HMS Lion is visible offshore.
