Data is critical. If you don't have the data, then what can you say.
Simple megafauna extinction stories ('humans turned up and killed everything') are weakly supported. The work of people like Gilbert is helping to figure out what actually happened, in Australia in his case (similar debates elsewhere, e.g. Americas).

Am speaking at this event later today on the evidence for a mass extinction event of #megafauna in the Late Pleistocene (ca. 40-ish thousand years ago) of Australia. **SPOILER ALERT** The current data just don't stack-up.
Looking forward to co-hosting the ‘Ecological and cultural heritage in the Anthropocene’ conference in Brisbane next week with Alison Crowther and @clarchaeology! AnthropoceneEvent@gmail.com to register, places limited!. #Anthropocene #Archaeology #Ecology #CulturalHeritage

We've known about it for a few years but have not been able to get it out (or figure out what it is). It's in a slightly awkward position and the surrounding rock is solid like concrete. It was found with colleagues from @ARCHE_Griffith , @itbofficial, and @UQ_News . 2/2.

I know of at least one cast of the specimen in an Australian museum, but it was so good to see the original at @itbofficial. Here is a 3D @Sketchfab model I made; I hope it will be useful to others! #FossilFriday #marsupial #megafauna. 3/3.

The specimen is from near Jaypura, West Papua (Irian Jaya) and was originally described in 1985. #FossilFriday. Re-examination later showed that it is synonymous with Nototherium watutense, an equally weird and very poorly known diprotodontid. Age? Maybe Plio/Pleistocene 2/3

I was very lucky to see first-hand the holotype of Zygomaturus nimborensis recently. This is one of the wonderfully weird, but sadly extinct, diprotodontid marsupial #megafauna of New Guinea. A #FossilFriday mini thread and link to an interactive 3D model 👇👇👇 1/3
