Conversion therapy is a huge risk, because using a position of trust as a therapist to change an unchangeable part of someone puts kids at high risk of suicide attempts.

Ultimately, conversion “therapy” hurts LGBTQ youth. Someone doesn’t choose to be a gay or trans – it is not a lifestyle or choice, and as such, no amount of talk or persuasion can make an LGBTQ person not LGBTQ.

Conversion “therapy” is a dangerous and discredited practice that is committed by fringe therapists in an attempt to change LGBTQ kids. We use quotes, because it is not in fact therapy.

This means that the ban in place currently is at risk of being overturned. So, what is conversion therapy and why is so dangerous?

This fall, SCOTUS will hear oral arguments in Chiles v. Salazar - a case that will determine if a law that prohibits state-licensed mental health professionals from using dangerous conversion practices on minors violates the free speech clause of the first amendment.
