[4/n] It works very well, and explains a lot with few assumptions: 1. Recombination arrest between sex chromosomes 2. Degeneration of the Y (or W) 3. Evolution of dosage compensation

[3/n] The main effect is caused by regulatory divergence between incipient species, especially concerning dosage compensation. This idea, often mentioned, and often dismissed, has not been fully explored theoretically.

[2/n] This theory differs from the well-known “dominance theory” and specifically links the evolution of sex chromosomes to the “rules of speciation”.

[1/n] This theory uses the same model that we previously built to explain the evolution of non-recombining, degenerate and dosage-compensated sex chromosomes.

Three major empirical patterns involving sex chromosomes have been observed in higher eukaryotes: Y (or W) chromosomes are often non-recombining and degenerate; when two species hybridize, but one...

6/n Step 4 = Hence, few inversions end up persisting a very long time. They become highly degenerate and dosage compensated, definitely removing the possibility of a reestablishment of recombination on the long term. The process repeats itself for several strata. Et voila.
