The reason is important. Our inate gullibility. Is explained by science. ☆We follow "perceived" authority. ☆We learn from repetition, not truth. ☆We react physically to smells and words with disgust. ☆We believe lies. ☆We are lazy. We prefer apathy/easy answers.
It's arguable that successive US administrations allowed this to occur, perhaps through over-optimism or naivete - I don't know. No matter the reason, we have done a poor job of handling information and asymmetric war against us.
