Post-doc fellow @DukeBiology PhD @MeyerLabatNSOE Interested in what cool critters can teach us about effects of pollution on health 🐛🐟 🧬

Just in time for NC Gov Roy Cooper’s #PFAS Awareness Week: There are an estimated >15,000 PFAS in production today. “Forever chemicals” are dangerous to health, and only 6 now have established regulatory levels.
Excited to share a preprint of my recent work showing variation in susceptibility to 10 different #PFAS chemicals in wild C. elegans. Genetic variation impacts sensitivity, but this varies by PFAS structure, leaving a lot of mechanistic toxicology work to pursue. Ideas welcome!.

So excited to see my PhD research from @MeyerLabatNSOE officially out, and more excited to share with everyone at #ICEM2022 @EMGSUS in a few days! Do chemicals that cause mtDNA damage result in mutations?

Did you know that the powerhouse of the cell has its own genome that is important for health?🧬Exposures to chemicals may impact mitochondrial DNA. There is a lot more we need to learn, but summarizing what is known so far in this #environmentalhealth review was a ton of fun!.

Zipcode should not predict health. EJ research ("helicopter science") has been extractive, but research can be used to leverage and understand root causes of health disparities and challenges to address by empowering communities.
**Latest from the @AgentschangeEJ**. "Helicopter #science doesn’t work—researchers need to shift toward real community partnerships that emphasize #sustainability and create opportunities for environmental change." .

My passion for science, mentoring, and inclusion definitely started with the incredible opportunity with @genome_explorer as an undergrad, who continues to encourage and inspire me, and many more along the way, particularly those in the @MeyerLabatNSOE and the @DukeGradSchool.

It’s always fun to work with the folks at the Research Translation Core @DukeSuperfund. Thanks for the opportunity to share some of the research I do in the Meyer lab @MeyerLabatNSOE!.
The trainees in our center are doing amazing work! Check out the next in our 'trainee research snapshot' series featuring @TessLeuthner, and her work to understand DNA damage from low-level chemical exposures.

[T]he racial caste hierarchy was created early in U.S. history and became embedded in our institutions, establishing whiteness as an extremely valuable asset that has been systematically protected by legal decisions, norms and behaviors that reinforce exclusion.
